Sometimes when playing outdoors, you may accidentally get bitten by an ant, and after an ant bite the area becomes red, swollen, and itchy. Many people don't know what to do about it. Below, I'll explain it to everyone.

Ants are a type of insect, also known as yi, xuanju, kunfu, pifuma, belonging to the phylum Arthropoda, class Insecta, order Hymenoptera, family Formicidae. There are many kinds of ants; more than 11,700 species are known worldwide, with 21 subfamilies and 283 genera, and more than 600 ant species have been identified within China.

Treatment after ant bites

1. After an ant bite, formic acid is secreted. You can apply soapy water or 3%-10% ammonia water, or 5%-10% sodium bicarbonate solution, to the bite site, then rinse with clean water, repeating several times.

2. If itching and swelling occur at the bite site, steroid-containing topical ointments or oral antihistamines can be used to relieve the symptoms.

3. If after being bitten by an ant there are more unusual reactions (such as generalized itching, hives, facial redness and swelling, difficulty breathing, chest pain, rapid heartbeat, etc.), you must seek care from a professional dermatologist or allergy specialist as soon as possible.

Prevention and treatment

1. Pay attention to personal and environmental hygiene, and change clothes and bedding frequently. Eliminate ants, bedbugs, fleas, lice, and other insects. Once symptoms are found, medication should be used promptly.

2. Do not drink alcohol or eat irritating foods, and go out to the suburbs or parks less often.

3.Straw mats should be washed clean and dried in the sun to reduce insects hidden in them and reduce the chance of insect bites.

4.Burn eggshells until charred, grind them into powder, and sprinkle it in corners or near ant nests to kill ants. If there are ants on cabinets, you can place some fragrant vegetables such as cilantro or celery to drive ants away. Placing some walnut leaves, tobacco shreds, or Sichuan pepper in places where ants frequently appear can also help repel ants.

Ant living habits

1. Housing: Ants generally build nests underground, and underground nests are very large in scale. They have good drainage and ventilation measures. Generally, worker ants are responsible for building the nest. The entrance and exit is mostly a small arched mound, like a volcano with a hole in the middle. There are also openings used for ventilation, and each room in the nest has a clear classification. Warm, humid soil is their favorite. They usually live in dry areas, but little known is that they can barely survive in water for two weeks.

2. Lifespan: Ants live a long time. Worker ants can survive from a few weeks to several years, while queens can survive several years or even ten years. One ant nest can grow in one place for 1 to 10 years. But most newly born queens will die!

3. Diet: Ant diets can be simply divided into the following categories:

Carnivorous, omnivorous leaning carnivorous, omnivorous leaning vegetarian, vegetarian.

Carnivorous: It is best to use insects as the main food. The proportion of purely carnivorous ant species among ants is relatively small, but each carnivorous ant species has different preferences for food, so not all insects can be used as food for all carnivorous ants. Therefore, when keeping them, you need to have the kind of insect that the ant likes to eat; otherwise, it is often mistaken that enough food has been provided while the ants do not eat or starve to death. So if you cannot prepare the food that the ants you keep like, keeping them can be very frustrating.

Omnivorous leaning carnivorous: Omnivorous leaning carnivorous ants make up a relatively larger proportion. They can eat both plant and animal food, but usually animal food attracts them more easily, and they are almost not picky about insects; generally speaking, they accept whatever comes. When feeding, in addition to insects as food, foods with animal protein can also be used. Examples of available foods are as follows: mainly carnivorous and dead insects, plus fruits and honeydew. When feeding, you can give insects, fish (which can be raw), cooked pork, cooked chicken, and so on.

Omnivorous leaning vegetarian: Omnivorous leaning vegetarian ant species overlap in many ways with omnivorous leaning carnivorous ant species. The only difference is that when insect corpses and sweet foods appear at the same time, omnivorous leaning vegetarian ants are more easily attracted by sweet foods.

Vegetarian: The proportion of purely vegetarian ant species among all ant species is also not large. Some ants also eat only certain special plants or fruit juices. For example, leafcutter ants abroad bring leaves back to the nest to grow fungi and use fungi as their only food. So keeping this type of ant is just like keeping purely carnivorous ants: you must first ensure that you can prepare the food, otherwise it will also be very frustrating.

4. Food intake: The key point is “do not overfeed”, especially for those ants that carry back as much food as there is and then enjoy it slowly in the nest. If fed too much, the food can easily expire and become moldy and spoiled in the nest, and it is even more likely to attract small insects that mainly feed on decaying matter to move in. By then, if they breed in the nest, it can be unsightly, and if the number of small insects is too large, it may even endanger the safety of ant larvae. In addition, if the food source is live insects, it may cause parasitic worms or mites that had already laid eggs on that food to grow, and the mites will then breed in the nest like a plague and attach to every ant and larva. A parasitized ant may have its whole body covered by multiple mites at the same time, and usually will not live long. This also creates a fatal crisis for the entire colony.

5. Pathfinding: Ants are colonial insects and live a social life, and each has its own home. Most ant homes are below ground, where they cannot easily find abundant food. When the weather is clear and warm, we often see teams of ants busily crawling on the ground. If you observe carefully, or sprinkle some bread crumbs in front of them, you will see that when they reach the food location, they begin to carry away the delicious food you prepared for them. If one ant cannot carry it alone, then two, three, or more ants will come together and carry it jointly. After they get food, they will crawl back home in an orderly way along their original route and drag the food back for storage, to enjoy later. This is the role of pheromones.
