What are the fastest methods for using an empty beehive to attract wild bees?
In the vast mountainous areas and woodlands of China, there are large numbers of Chinese native bees. Many bee enthusiasts have obtained large numbers of wild bees by catching them in the wild. In the past, many people who kept Chinese bees obtained wild bees by searching for and catching them, so how do you attract bees with an empty beehive? What are the fastest methods for attracting wild bees?
How do you attract bees with an empty beehive?
First, we need to make a beehive to attract bees. For this beehive, we need to take the bees' living habits into account, which means creating an environment suitable for bees to live in. Because our beehive is placed in the wild, it is best for our beehive to have extremely strong rot resistance, and it must not have any unusual odor, mainly to prevent bees from being driven away by the smell.
Second, simulate the bees' living environment. Friends who have bought beehives surely know that beehives come in many types, and one distinction is whether or not they are wax-boiled. On the current market, wax-boiled beehives are slightly more expensive. The main reason is that wax-boiled beehives not only remove the beehive's original smell, but also give the beehive the scent of honey, and another function is that they make the beehive more resistant to rot, so we can simulate this method by coating the beehive with beeswax to increase the beehive's honey scent.
We all know that when a bee colony wants to settle somewhere, one type of worker bee in the colony will first scout, which is what we commonly call a scout bee. The beehive we choose has a relatively strong honey scent, so it can attract bees, and when the scout bee discovers this good environment, it will naturally notify the other bees to come and live there. When the queen bee brings the other bees to this dwelling, our bee-luring process is complete.
In fact, we have been using this method for a long time. Many of our friends who keep Chinese bees like to place some empty bee barrels beside bee colonies. They do not coat them with wax, but instead directly put a few pieces of wax in the bee barrel, which will also attract some bees, and at least when the bees swarm, some bees will move directly into the empty barrel. So if we say the bee-luring hive we are discussing now is advanced, its predecessor is actually our most ancient method of luring bees in place.
Making a bee-luring hive
Using a bee-luring hive, this method can be described as waiting for something to come to you, but many friends have encountered many problems when using bee-luring hives, namely that the bees simply do not go in, or that they go in and then escape again. Under normal circumstances, as long as our bee-luring hive is made well, bees will not run out after entering. If the bees run out, that can only mean one thing: our bee-luring hive is not up to standard. So how can we make a bee-luring hive that is up to standard?
Step 1: Prepare the main box of a standard hive. A bee-luring hive is itself a beehive. We do not want a super box, just a single main box, but we need to treat this main box. If there are no pests or unusual odors inside a beehive, bees generally will not fly away. If either of the above occurs, it may cause the introduced bees to fly away. So when using it, we usually recommend using an old beehive.
Step 2: Prepare beeswax, a pot, and a brush. If we have discarded beeswax at home, we can take it out and use it. Add water directly to the pot, then put the beeswax into the pot and boil it.
Step 3: After the beeswax melts, use a brush dipped in the beeswax water to brush the bee-luring hive. The method is to first open the hive lid, then apply the beeswax evenly onto the beehive, coating it evenly from the inside out.
Step 4: After coating the inside and outside of the beehive, also coat the hive lid, and smooth out the gaps in the beehive.
Step 5: After the beeswax coating is complete, place it in a cool place to air-dry naturally. After three or four days, it can be used.
This is a method for making a bee-luring hive. When using it, we can place the empty box in the outskirts where bees are likely to appear. If conditions permit, we can also directly put some foundation in the beehive, so that when the bees come, they can build comb directly on the foundation.
The fastest methods for attracting bees
1. Honey scent: Apply some honey inside an old beehive and place it where wild bees frequently move around. Observe every evening to see whether any bees enter. If they do, move the beehive away, and the moving distance must exceed three thousand meters, otherwise the bees will return.
2. Honeycomb fragments: In the evening, burn some fragments of honeycomb near the beehive. At this time, wild bees will come near the beehive after smelling the aroma. If the beehive also has the scent of bees having lived there, they will enter the beehive.
3. Use scout bees: Use honey to lure scout bees into the beehive. Do not close the hive entrance; let them leave on their own. After repeating this several times, the scout bees will bring a large colony of bees. After the colony arrives, find the queen bee and control her well so she does not fly away.
How do you find wild bee colonies?
1. Habitat: Wild bees have very strict requirements for their habitat. They often choose places that are suitable both for living in cold winters and for living in hot summers, and where enemies find it very difficult to attack. Therefore, they often nest in tree holes, rock caves, and earth caves on mountain slopes and mountainsides facing south with their backs to the north.
2. Nectar source conditions: Nectar sources are the foundation for a bee colony's survival and the primary condition for wild bees to build a nest. Therefore, based on the local nectar plant species, quantity, and the duration of the honey flow, judge the existence of wild Chinese bees and how many there are.
3. Defecation state: Worker bees usually defecate near the hive. From October to February of the following year, when sunlight is weak, bees will leave the hive to defecate before 12 noon when the sun shines on the hive. This can be seen very clearly within about 100 m of the hive.
4. Water-collecting behavior: In the dry season, bees go to places with water every day to collect water, and most water-collecting bees are old bees that do not fly far. Find the place where bees collect water. After collecting enough water, the bees fly straight back, so follow the direction of their flight.
5. Honey-collecting behavior: After worker bees collect enough nectar and pollen and fly back toward the nest, when they are about 3 meters above the ground, the hive is not too far away, so you should follow the direction of their flight. If returning bees fly relatively high, more than six or seven meters above the ground, it means the hive is more than 1 kilometer away.
6. Tracking worker bees: Generally choose 9 to 11 a.m., pay attention to observing the return flight line, and track along the bees' flight line. You can also quietly listen to the sound of bees flying past. If the flight sound is sharp and disappears quickly, it indicates that the nest is far away or that they are bees leaving the hive. If the sound is slightly longer and disappears slowly, it indicates that the nest is not far away.
