How to handle a mountain rose (Aeonium) after it blooms
I. Handling after blooming
It usually needs to be grown for five years before it has a chance to bloom, and it needs other plants to pollinate it, so if you only have one of these plants at home, it will not bloom. Note that after blooming the plant will die, but its offsets will still survive.
If you are willing to let this plant at home bloom, be aware that even if the varieties are different, they can still pollinate each other successfully, but with other different genera, they generally will not pair successfully. After it blooms, you can choose to pull it out, or cut off its offsets and replant them to grow a new life.
II. How to keep it from blooming
If you want it to live longer, you can keep it from having the chance to bloom; generally you can remove its flower stalk.
1. Do not feel sorry for it; use a bit more force. It is fine to remove the part below the flower stalk as well. This way the chance of growing intact offsets will be a bit higher. If you cannot bear to cut it off, it will not be effective.
2. After removing the flower stalk, if the roots are growing well and you take good care of it, in about seven to fifteen days, during its growth period, it will grow offsets, usually three to five very healthy offsets.
3. If the offsets that grow are normal, then the plant will not bloom, so it can live longer and will not bloom again for the time being. Generally speaking, the success rate of doing this is over 80 percent.
4. The cool weather of spring and autumn is when it grows fastest. If the weather is hot, it will go dormant in summer and temporarily stop growing, so we need to give it shade and ventilation. In deep winter, reduce the frequency of watering. If it drops below zero degrees, move it indoors to help it get through the cold winter.
Removing the flower stalk is the best way to keep it alive. If you want to see it bloom and also do not want it to die, that is very hard to achieve. After all, nature has its own laws, and we cannot force changes on them.
