Water buffalo mostly inhabit primeval forests and swamps, living alone, in pairs, or in small groups, foraging for aquatic plants at dawn and dusk, and all water buffalo are endangered species. So do domesticated water buffalo swim? How can conception rates be improved? How many calves per year? According to bovine family data, water buffalo can swim; water buffalo have large bellies and large lungs, inhale a lot of air, and float easily in water, and with their front legs paddling and hind legs kicking, they can also move freely through mud.

How many calves does a domesticated water buffalo have per year?

1. Water buffalo are polygynous, breeding in the rainy season in tropical regions, usually October-November, with females producing one calf every 2 years. Water buffalo have the longest gestation period in the bovine family, about 300-340 days. Females reach sexual maturity at 1.5 years, males at 2 years. The lifespan of wild water buffalo is 12 years.

2. Lowland anoa can breed year-round, with a gestation period of 275-315 days, producing 1 calf per birth, weaned at 6-9 months, sexually mature at 2-3 years, and lowland anoa live 28-30 years.

3. The Mindoro dwarf buffalo produces one calf per birth, with a gestation period of 300 days. There must be a two-year gap between births. The young are cared for by the mother for 2-4 years before becoming independent. The typical lifespan is 20 years, up to a maximum of 25 years.

How can the conception rate of water buffalo be improved?

1. Keep good breeding records and analyze the reproductive patterns of each buffalo

Each buffalo's estrus situation and duration, body functions, calving interval, etc. are inconsistent, so we need to pay attention to breeding record work, grasp individual reproductive patterns, and do a good job of breeding the herd.

2. Do good estrus identification and strive to breed at the appropriate time

The estrus signs of water buffalo are not obvious, so increasing the number of daily observations is key to good estrus identification; external observation must not be less than 4 times/day. Although there are many buffalo with silent estrus, buffalo in estrus basically all show a “string hanging” discharge. Only by doing good estrus observation can a foundation be laid for timely insemination. From May to September, because the weather is hotter and mosquitoes and flies increase, it becomes more difficult to identify estrus during the day, so estrus observation is mainly carried out at night. Grasping the estrus period well and achieving timely insemination is the key to improving the conception rate of water buffalo.

Although the duration of estrus in water buffalo varies widely, the average duration of estrus in most water buffalo is concentrated within 48 to 60 h, so about 30 h after estrus appears, the first insemination is carried out, with the second insemination 12 to 24 h later; if the string is still hanging after the second insemination, a third insemination is carried out. Inseminating too early or too late will affect the conception rate of the cow. Generally, buffalo inseminated at the appropriate time within 24 h after the appearance of estrus and after 60 h account for only a very small proportion, and only a very small number of buffalo conceive when inseminated during these periods.

3. Pay attention to breeding during the peak estrus period of water buffalo.

Do a good job of breeding during the peak estrus period from October to April of the following year. These 7 months are the peak estrus period for water buffalo and also the period with the highest conception rate; during these 7 months, the average conception rate per estrous cycle can reach about 55%, with the highest reaching 62%. Therefore, special attention must be paid to estrus identification and timely breeding; once these 7 months are missed, the annual reproductive rate will be greatly affected. From May to September, because the weather is hotter and mosquitoes and flies increase, it is difficult to accurately observe whether buffalo are in estrus, and non-estrus and abnormal estrus (false estrus, delayed ovulation, no ovulation) increase. The average conception rate per estrous cycle is only about 32%.

4. Do a good job in the prevention and treatment of ovarian dysfunction and endometritis.

Treatment of ovarian dysfunction should be adjusted from two aspects, endocrine and nutritional metabolism; the most commonly used drugs are PG, LHRH-A3, etc. Endometritis is mainly prevented, and prevention can be noted from the following aspects: standardize the hygiene of insemination operations, do a good job in preventing miscarriage and protecting the fetus, strictly manage delivery operations and care, and pay attention to postpartum care work.

5. Use synchronization of estrus technology during the off-season of estrus

Synchronization of estrus technology makes it easier for inseminators to grasp the estrus and ovulation status of buffalo, solves the problem of difficult estrus identification in water buffalo, basically enables timely insemination, and significantly improves the conception rate of frozen semen improvement.

6. Test the viability of frozen semen before breeding

The freeze tolerance of water buffalo frozen semen is relatively low, and long-term low temperature affects the viability of frozen semen. When conditions permit, conduct viability sampling tests on frozen semen of the same batch before breeding, so as to rule out breeding failure caused by using frozen semen with impaired viability.
