The turtle, also known as the Chinese pond turtle, is a common reptile in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River in China. Because it can be eaten and also used as medicine, it is widely farmed, and artificial breeding is now being carried out in most areas. So what do small turtles eat to grow up? Rice or meat? How do you raise them?

1. What do they eat?

1. Food that wild small turtles can eat:

Turtles have a fairly broad diet and can eat rice grain, wheat, shrimp, small fish, insects, snails, peas and so on. Among these, their favorite foods are corn, rice grain, small fish and snails.

2. Food that pet small turtles can eat:

As pet turtles, they can be fed rice, turtle food, beef, loach and so on. Turtles have a fairly broad diet and will eat rice grain, wheat, peas, small fish, shrimp, insects, snails and so on. Among these, their favorite foods are small fish, snails, corn and rice grain.

3. Food that artificially raised small turtles can eat:

During artificial breeding, in order to meet the various nutrients turtles need for growth and avoid poor growth and loss of appetite caused by a single feed, a variety of feeds should be used, such as animal-based feeds including fish, shrimp, snails and river mussels, and plant-based feeds including rice grain, wheat and corn. To let turtles fully digest these feeds, before feeding, peas, corn and so on must first be crushed and soaked in water for about 2 hours to soften the food. At the same time, other large pieces of food must also be cut up, and only then can they be fed. It is worth noting that while raising small turtles, different bait should be prepared according to their growth rate to promote rapid growth.

4. Feeding tips

(1) Particularly small turtles need special feed during the raising period. Once they are a little bigger, they can be fed the shrimp and lean meat that we eat. 1 or 2 pieces at a time is enough. Turtles generally begin eating in mid-April each year and stop eating in early October, so the amount of food must be controlled well. Generally, hatchling turtles only need to be fed once a day, and after one year of age, once every 2 days. At the same time, when feeding, it must be done in water so you can observe the small turtle's growth and activity state and adjust the food accordingly.

(2) Although turtles have a broad diet, if they are fed food without nutrition, they will suffer from nutritional imbalance. Therefore, when feeding, choose high-quality, nutritious feed. Among these, turtles need a large amount of calcium, so food containing a large amount of calcium should be fed. In addition, carp feed and dog food are also quite suitable foods. Occasionally feeding some fresh foods such as boneless fish, snake meat or mice is sure to win a turtle's affection.

5. Feeding precautions:

(1) Fixed location. When farming turtles, fixed feeding points can be set up in sections along the edge of the pond. The feeding platform at the feeding point should be close to the water surface so that turtles can swallow water and bite food easily. At the same time, this lets the turtles develop good habits each time and makes it easy to observe their activity and check their food intake.

(2) Fixed quality. The feed given should stay fresh. After feeding, leftover food should be cleared away promptly to prevent the feed from rotting and smelling, which would affect the turtles' appetite and pollute the water quality.

(3) Fixed quantity. Although turtles can eat a lot, it is also seasonal. Generally, the amount of feed given depends on water quality, air temperature, water quality, activity level and the turtles' appetite; base it on their appetite and activity level, and it is best to leave a slight surplus for that meal. Generally, feed once every 1 to 2 days.

6. What if they do not eat?

(1) Turtles eat in water. If there is no water, they will not eat. The water level must at least cover them. If there is no water or the water level is too low, they will become lethargic and, by not moving, reduce consumption until they starve to death.

(2) In spring and autumn, turtles are not very active in the morning and evening and only feed around midday, so feed them at that time. In summer, turtles generally do not move at midday, so generally feed them in the afternoon. Grasp the timing well and figure out your turtle's temperament, and you can let it eat happily.

(3) Maintain quality. What they eat must be rich and to their liking. The food fed must be fresh. After the turtle finishes eating, change its water and clean the pond thoroughly. This is both hygienic and does not affect its mood for eating.

(4) Prevention. Regularly disinfect the turtle's living environment and feed some medicine to prevent disease and boost appetite, so as to prevent disease from breeding. In addition, the food fed should be kept clean and hygienic; it is best to screen it before feeding.

7. Reasons for not eating:

(1) The temperature is not high enough. Turtles only eat when it is around 20°C or above. But at around 17°C, they will occasionally still have a desire to seek food. Do not feed them, otherwise it will cause indigestion.

(2) The turtle may have gastroenteritis and needs medication treatment. If a turtle keeps not eating, it needs to be soaked in glucose and some vitamins to supplement its energy, along with medication treatment.

(3) The water depth is not enough. Apart from tortoises, whether aquatic turtles or semi-aquatic turtles, turtles like deep water. When the water is too shallow, the turtle would rather starve than eat.

(4) A change of environment. A newly changed, unfamiliar environment will cause a turtle to eat abnormally; it needs a period of time to adapt.

2. Raising tips:

1. Activity area

Turtles are semi-aquatic, semi-terrestrial animals and can live both in water and on land. Nowadays most people like to keep them in water, which prevents them from moving freely on land. So to let turtles grow well, a basking platform can be built in the turtle pond, such as placing a wooden board or stone slab, to make it easier for turtles to move around and promote digestion.

2. Light

Turtles need regular light, which makes keeping turtles rather troublesome, especially small turtles. If they lack light, small turtles will develop all kinds of diseases. Light can promote turtles' absorption of calcium. Without light, turtles will become calcium deficient, and for an animal that is all bones, calcium deficiency is a big deal.

3. Disease prevention

The best way to prevent turtles from getting sick is sufficient light. In addition, regularly changing the water can effectively prevent germs from breeding. There are special disinfectants sold on the market for disinfecting fish tanks. You can use them for turtles; just spray them into the water.

4. How much water

If a turtle stays in deep water all the time, it will easily become listless and not move a step all day. So the water volume should generally ensure that in deep water the turtle's shell can be submerged, and in shallow water its head can stick out, making movement convenient.
