Cow dung, as the name suggests, is the excrement of cattle, that is, feces. In Tibetan it is called “Jiuwa” and has many uses, such as being used as fuel. Below, let's learn about what the uses and value of cow dung are? How should it be processed to be the most profitable?

1. What are the uses and value of cow dung?

1. Cow dung can be used as fuel: in China's Tibet region, using cow dung as fuel for boiling tea and cooking has a history of more than a thousand years. This not only solves the problem of cow dung but also provides people with fuel, so it can be said to serve two purposes at once.

2. Cow dung can be piled up and fermented to serve as fertilizer: cow dung not only takes up space but also has a foul odor, but if it is used for pile fermentation, it can be used as organic fertilizer.

3. Cow dung can be fermented to serve as a substitute for coal and biogas for power generation: the electricity generated each year by fermenting cow dung can save 1.2 million yuan in electricity costs. In addition, Fengdu County can also develop cow dung sticks and cow dung honeycomb briquettes. Cow dung sticks made from cow dung are used as fuel and have a high combustion value. Cow dung honeycomb briquettes are pressed from cow dung and coal in a 4:6 ratio, solving the air pollution caused by burning honeycomb briquettes.

4. Cow dung can be used as animal feed: after processing, the various nutrients and minerals contained in cow dung are still quite suitable for use as feed.

5. Cow dung can be used as a mushroom substrate to grow fungi: dehydrated and fermented cow dung can be used together with cottonseed hulls, corncobs, and so on as a mushroom substrate for cultivating and growing button mushrooms, mushrooms, and other fungi. When local demand for button mushrooms is high, a small trial planting can be done.

6. Cow dung can be used as a raw material for raising earthworms: earthworm powder is an excellent additive for feed and has a higher protein content than fishmeal. At present, fishmeal sells for more than 20,000 yuan per ton. If earthworm powder is developed on a large scale, the benefits will certainly be considerable. Testing and analysis by the Beijing Institute of Nutritional Resources show that proteinase preparations, microbial preparations, and feed additives made from earthworm powder are natural health agents for animals. Feeding them to livestock and poultry can significantly promote animal growth and make the animals rarely contract diseases. Various special fertilizers produced with earthworm castings as the main raw material not only have high fertilizer efficiency but can also inhibit the spread of certain crop diseases and insect pests, while also raising soil temperature and preserving water and fertilizer.

7. The image of cow dung can also be used as a toy, because cow dung is a homophone of “Niu Fen” and has a very good meaning, so selling it as a toy is still quite good.

2. How should cow dung be processed to be the most profitable?

1. Dry and dehydrate cow dung to use as heating fuel: cow dung powder has high heat and produces little smoke when burned, basically achieving smokeless combustion, so cow dung can be gathered, dried, and sold to farmers for heating kangs or supplied to some regular boiler-burning factories.

2. Ferment cow dung in biogas digesters: gather cow dung for fermentation in biogas digesters and convert it into electrical energy. Moreover, during the biogas production process, pathogenic microorganisms, parasite eggs, and so on present in cow dung can also be killed, so it will not cause secondary pollution to the environment, and the fermentation residue can also be used as fertilizer, achieving multiple benefits at once.

3. Use cow dung as feed for raising chickens and fish: pile and ferment processed cow dung together with bran to breed earthworms as feed for raising chickens, fish, and other animals. In this way, organic matter is recycled, increasing returns without causing environmental pollution.

4. Use cow dung to grow mushrooms: mix cow dung with rice straw for fermentation, then use it as a substrate to grow mushrooms and other fungi. There are many techniques online for how to use cow dung to grow mushrooms and methods for learning how to make the substrate, so as to realize the high-value use of cow dung.

5. Process cow dung into organic fertilizer: cow dung can be processed into organic fertilizer, mainly sold to ecological plantations, orchards, flower plantations, and so on.

3. How much does cow dung cost per ton?

1. Ordinary cow dung that has not been processed or treated costs about 100 yuan/ton. For detailed prices, you can ask local cattle farms.

2. If it is dehydrated and deeply processed cow dung, it can sell for 1,000 yuan/ton.

4. How is cow dung processed into fertilizer?

1. First, dry or drain the cow dung so that its moisture content is controlled below 85%, then add straw powder to the cow dung. The ratio of cow dung to straw powder is 7:3, so that the carbon ratio of the raw material (cow dung) and auxiliary material (straw powder) is controlled at 23-28, and the moisture content is controlled at 52%-68%.

2. Then add an organic fertilizer fermentation decomposing agent. After the raw material, auxiliary material, and microbial agent are mixed and stirred, they can be piled for fermentation. The piling requirements are: pile the mixed material on the fermentation ground into a trapezoidal windrow with a bottom width of about 1.8-3 m, a top width of 0.8-1 m, and a height of 1-1.5 m, with a gap of about 0.5 m between windrows. (The width and size above are only reference values; the specific ones should be based on actual conditions.)

3. After it is prepared, the temperature will rise above 60°C within 24-48 hours. Keep the temperature for 48 hours, then begin turning the pile. When turning the pile, be sure to do it evenly and thoroughly, and try to turn the lower-layer material into the middle and upper parts of the pile as much as possible so that it decomposes fully.

4. After the first turning, turn the pile once every week thereafter. If the temperature exceeds 70°C, the pile must be turned immediately; otherwise, beneficial microorganisms and fermentation bacteria will be killed in large numbers, which is not conducive to fermentation and decomposition.
