How often should you water a Clivia, the city flower of Changchun? Placement taboos and care methods
Many friends enjoy growing flowers, and Clivia (Clivia miniata), as a perennial herbaceous plant, has won everyone's affection. But Clivia is a semi-shade plant, and beginners who do not know much about it may find it hard to keep alive. So how often should you water a Clivia? What are the placement taboos for Clivia? And how do you care for Clivia?
1. How often should you water a Clivia?
The roots of Clivia have the function of storing water, so people generally hear that Clivia is drought-tolerant and should not be watered too frequently, to prevent root rot. But it also cannot stay in a drought state all the time.
When watering on a daily basis, always observe the wet or dry condition of its soil. If it is on the dry side, then water it; watering here means simply keeping the soil in a moist state, and you must not water heavily and make it overly wet.
The watering frequency also differs in different seasons
1. In spring, water once a day;
2. In summer, use a spray bottle and mist the whole plant, including the surrounding area, with a layer of water. If it is cloudy, you can skip watering; if it is sunny, you can water once a day;
3. In autumn, water once every other day;
4. In winter, watering once a week is enough.
Watering tips also change according to the environment at the time. For example: if it is kept indoors in winter and the room is fairly dry, you can increase the watering frequency. On cloudy and rainy days in summer, you can extend the watering interval, and so on.
2. Clivia placement taboos
1. Entryway
The entryway is a very special position, directly connecting the indoors and the outdoors, and it contains all the fortune of the home, including good luck and bad luck. So if you want to place flowers and plants here, they should be placed facing the entryway, not with their back to it, otherwise it is easy to bring bad luck to the home, and it will also scatter all the wealth luck accumulated over a long time, thus affecting the home's fortune.
2. Balcony
It likes a warm environment. Judging from its growth habits, it fears both cold and heat, and if it is exposed to strong light while being grown, it will easily die. So when growing it, it is best to keep it indoors, and not place it outdoors or in a place with too much sunlight, otherwise its healthy growth will be affected. The balcony at home is the place with the most sunlight indoors, and for the sun-shy Clivia it is the least advisable placement position.
3. Coffee table
At home, many friends like to place plants on the coffee table when growing them, so that beautiful flowers can be seen as soon as you enter the door and your mood improves with them. But not every flower or plant suits being placed here; Clivia, for example, is better placed at the living room TV position. If you insist on putting it on the coffee table, it will affect the feng shui effect, make the family less harmonious, and also cause the family to lose part of its wealth luck.
3. How do you care for Clivia?
1. Moderate light
Clivia is very sensitive to sunlight, and only moderate light will let it grow more luxuriantly. Too much light will scorch the plant, while too little light will make the plant wilt and slow its growth. It is best to place it on a south-facing balcony with good light at home, so that it gets a moderate amount of light as the sun rises and sets. Especially in summer, put it in an indoor area with diffused light to avoid direct sunlight.
2. Moderate watering
Clivia should be watered neither too much nor too little. Too much water causes root rot, while too little causes the plant's leaves to turn yellow. Follow the rule of watering when dry and letting it dry between waterings: in spring and autumn, water once every 3 to 5 days; in summer, water once every 1 to 2 days; in winter, water once every 7 days.
3. Moderate temperature
Clivia can neither take heat nor endure a cold environment. It is best if its growing temperature can be kept between 15 and 22°C. In summer, when the temperature exceeds 32°C, it needs to be shaded, and also moved to a cool environment to bring the temperature down. In winter, the temperature must never drop below 5°C, otherwise it will freeze to death.
4. Fertilizing
Clivia must be fertilized in moderation, neither too concentrated nor too weak. Concentrated fertilizer will cause the plant to suffer root burn and yellow leaves. You only need to buy phosphorus fertilizer, dilute it with water and then pour it at the roots of the Clivia, fertilizing once every 10 to 15 days. When fertilizing before the flowering period, applying some phosphorus and potassium fertilizer will also make its flowers bloom more brightly.
