Black Pig Farming Techniques Explained: The Necessity of Pen Separation and Breed Classification
Black pigs have a relatively long history of domestication in our country, with a traceable history of five thousand years. Black pork is somewhat more expensive than other pork because farmers put more care into the farming techniques. So how are black pig farming techniques? What black pig breeds are there?
I. Black pig farming techniques
1. Feeding black pigs requires attention to balanced nutritional matching; you cannot favor just one type of feed. Green feed, concentrated feed and others must all be included, so that you can raise nutritious and healthy black pigs. As for the grass species that black pigs eat, farmers should choose grass species with fresh, crisp, tender leaves and high protein content. For the sake of the black pigs' nutrition, sun-dry the grass each day before feeding; on rainy days you can consider preparing the needed amount in advance. Generally black pigs need to be fed pasture twice a day, while piglets need more care and one extra feeding.
2. As black pigs gradually grow larger in body size, they should be separated into pens for rearing after about 60 days, with 2-3 black pigs per pen; too few will cause the black pigs to expend energy through excessive activity. Once black pigs are in the gestation period, concentrated feed can be added to their diet, which can ensure the nutrition of the piglets and also let the sow retain energy.
3. Hygiene and disinfection for black pigs cannot be neglected. Farmers should clean the manure pens three times a day and disinfect with professional disinfectants; this can reduce the probability of black pigs getting sick and avoid outbreaks of swine fever. At the same time, pay attention to the temperature of the black pig pens; the temperature of the whole pig pen should not be too high or too low, keeping it at 14-26 degrees Celsius. If the summer temperature is too high, you can rinse the pig pen with cool water to lower the black pigs' body temperature. When the winter temperature is too low, you can consider laying thick dry grass inside the pig pen for the black pigs to rest on.
II. What black pig breeds are there?
1. Laiwu black pig
The Laiwu black pig is a pig breed recognized by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization. Laiwu black pigs have strong reproductive capacity and also sell at a relatively high price. Among pig breeds farmed in our country, it is one of the types that is relatively easy to raise and has relatively mature techniques.
2. Northeast Min pig
The Northeast Min pig, as the name suggests, is a pig breed raised in the Northeast, and is an excellent pig breed with worldwide renown. Everyone knows the Northeast has especially cold winters, so the Northeast Min pig is the most cold-resistant among pig breeds. This also creates its characteristics of firm meat and a higher proportion of lean meat.
3. Tibetan pig
The Tibetan pig originates from the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau region. The weather in the plateau region is relatively extreme, with large temperature differences between day and night and a harsher climate, which gives Tibetan pigs good stress resistance. They do not demand much in terms of feed ratio or classification, and Tibetan pigs are smaller in body size, making them relatively simple to raise. Tibetan people are accustomed to free-range herding without much restraint; just pen them in the pig pen and give them food. Tibetan pig meat is fine and tender, and its price, after costs are added, is not low either.
