Pothos Growing Tips: How to Make Water-Propped Pothos Root Quickly?
Water-propped pothos, as the name suggests, is pothos grown using the water culture method. This seemingly simple way of growing pothos actually involves many growing tips to keep in mind, such as how to make water-propped pothos root quickly?
1. How to make water-propped pothos root quickly?
1. Water quality: The water used for water-propping pothos is very important. You can choose clean tap water or purified water to grow pothos.
2. Changing the water: At the beginning of water-propping pothos, change the water once every 2 to 3 days, and after two weeks, change it once every 7 to 10 days. Note that the part of the stem placed in the water must not have leaves on it, otherwise it can easily affect water quality.
3. Choosing a nutrient solution: Because of the change in environment, water-propped pothos grows very slowly at first. Using nutrients can also promote rapid growth in pothos, but before using a nutrient solution, you must dilute it with water, otherwise it may very likely cause uneven local nutrient levels in the pothos.
4. Light: Water-propped pothos needs plenty of scattered light for its leaves to spread out and stay emerald green. Normally it is best to place it somewhere with enough scattered light. If the environment is too dark, you can move it about every ten days to a place with enough scattered light to receive a few hours of light, which can also maintain the glossiness of the leaf color.
2. How to water-propagate pothos?
1. Stem cutting water propagation method
① First, choose a pot of vigorously growing pothos and cut a water-propagation cutting, about 15 cm long, then rinse the dust off the leaves with clean water;
② The cutting must be healthy and free of pests and diseases, and it is best if it has aerial roots, so it can root quickly and adapt to the water culture environment;
③ Insert the cut stem directly into the water culture container;
④ The stem inserted into the water culture container must not have leaves on it, to avoid rot polluting the water and infection by pathogens.
2. Unpotting and root-washing method
① Choose 1 pot of relatively well-growing pothos;
② Gently remove the pothos from the potting soil and wash the soil off the roots. Be sure not to damage the pothos roots;
③ Trim off some old roots and diseased or damaged leaves, then place the pothos into a water culture container filled with clean water for water propagation.
3. Points to note
① Do not water with rice washing water
Pothos must not be watered with rice washing water. Although rice washing water contains quite a few nutrients that can be used, it must be composted, fermented and fully decomposed before use. Otherwise it will not only easily breed insects, but in serious cases can also cause root rot, so this point must be noted.
② Prevent direct sunlight
Although pothos is a sun-loving plant, it is not suited to direct sunlight. In summer especially, even more attention should be paid to preventing strong direct light, because this will only make the pothos leaves turn yellow and may even cause its death. So when pothos is placed in the sun, you must provide shade for it.
