Lucky bamboo (Dracaena sanderiana) carries the meaning of "bamboo brings peace" and "bringing good fortune and gathering wealth." Grown in water, it can maintain its vitality for a long time, with old and new roots alternating yellow and white in the clear water, looking full of life. So what are the growing methods for hydroponic lucky bamboo and precautions? What should you do when there are too many roots filling the bottle and the leaves turn yellow? How long is the lifespan of hydroponic lucky bamboo?

I. Growing Methods and Precautions for Hydroponic Lucky Bamboo

1. Growing Methods for Hydroponic Lucky Bamboo

(1) Choosing a container

Choose an appropriate container according to the form of water growing and the length of the material. For example, use a shallow-rimmed flower pot for shaped water growing; when the requirements for plant water growing are not high, wine bottles, beverage bottles and the like around you can also be used.

(2) Water growing a potted plant

Take the potted plant out with its roots, wash it clean, cut off some old roots and damaged roots, and then grow it directly in water.

(3) Water rooting of cuttings

Cut a well-grown mature branch, use a sharp knife to cut the base of the cutting into a slanted opening, the cut should be smooth to increase the area for absorbing water and nutrients, and insert the base with leaves into a bottle. Soaking the base in water to a depth of 1-2 cm is enough, and silvery-white fibrous roots will grow in about 15 days.

(4) Shaped water growing

When lucky bamboo is still a young plant, various shapes can be made by twisting and bending the branches, and it can maintain that shape once mature. Mature stems have strong sprouting and rooting ability and can be cut into different lengths and tied into tower shapes, which is the product called "lucky bamboo tower" on the market. Choose a shallow pot slightly larger than the tower stem, place the tower in it, and add clear water to slightly cover its basal nodes.

2. Precautions for Hydroponic Lucky Bamboo

(1) It is advisable to choose robust, healthy plants, with upright stems, complete leaves and intact terminal buds;

(2) Before placing in the bottle, cut the base of the branch into a 45-degree slanted opening; the cut should be smooth to facilitate nutrient absorption;

(3) The water depth should cover the base by about 5 to 10 cm, change the clear water once every 3 to 4 days, and roots can grow in about 15 days;

(4) After rooting, do not change the water frequently; just add water promptly when the water level drops;

(5) Every 3 to 4 weeks, a small amount of compound nutrient solution can be added to keep the leaves green.

(6) Do not place lucky bamboo where it is constantly exposed to air conditioning or electric fans, or near other heat-generating appliances, to avoid dry and withered leaf tips and leaf edges.

II. What to Do When Hydroponic Lucky Bamboo Roots Fill the Bottle?

It is best to cut off some of the old roots and keep some of the new roots. You can switch to a larger container to let the roots grow; it does not matter if they become tangled, just let them grow freely.

In addition, when trimming the roots, be very careful not to damage the main roots, otherwise they can easily rot and die.

III. What to Do When Hydroponic Lucky Bamboo Leaves Turn Yellow?

1. Water quality problems

For hydroponic lucky bamboo, water is the foundation of its growth, so it is naturally also a cause of yellowing leaves. Unclear water quality causes root rot and blackening, which in turn causes yellow leaves.

Solution: Check whether the roots are fresh. If there is rot, cut off the rotten part and switch to cooled boiled water. Change the water frequently during this period to keep the water clean, and wait for it to slowly recover.

2. Too little or too much light

When light is too dim, lucky bamboo cannot get enough sunlight and cannot form chlorophyll, which will naturally also cause the leaves to turn yellow.

When light is too strong, lucky bamboo is not suitable for strong light exposure, and strong light will cause the leaves to turn yellow.

Solution: For these two situations, first cut off the yellow leaves, then place the plant in a spot with suitable light, with appropriate shading or supplemental light, so that it slowly recovers.

3. Improper fertilizing

Over-fertilizing can also easily cause lucky bamboo to turn yellow. It mainly shows as dry brown tips on new leaves, while the leaf surface generally appears thick and lustrous-less, and uneven and not spread out; old leaves then scorch yellow and fall off.

Solution: At this point, change the water again, cut off the yellow leaves, stop fertilizing, and let it slowly recover.

Insufficient fertilizer mainly shows as the color of tender leaves becoming lighter, yellow or pale green rather than green; old leaves generally show no major change.

Solution: At this time, simply add an appropriate amount of fertilizer.

4. Improper placement

Although lucky bamboo has a certain ability to absorb radiation and purify the air, it should not be placed too close to a TV or refrigerator, as this can easily cause yellow leaves.

Solution: If you find yellow leaves on lucky bamboo, just move it to a different position and keep it away from them.

IV. How Long Is the Lifespan of Hydroponic Lucky Bamboo?

Lucky bamboo has the same long lifespan as ordinary bamboo, with no time limit. If growing it in water, it is recommended to put it in a vase, or in a cup, which is both easy to grow and ornamental. If after 1-2 years you want to change the method, you can choose a small flower pot and grow it in soil. Hanging 1-2 mascots on the stem is also nice-looking, and it will grow more new branches. You can then cut a few new branches from the pot and put them into a vase again; in this cycle it simply will not die.
