Water Lily: Water Culture or Soil Culture? Solutions for Dry Leaves
There are many varieties of lotus, such as Qingling Red Lotus, Friendship Peony Lotus, Fujian Red Lotus, White Jian Lotus, Sword Dance, and so on. Today we are going to talk about one of them, the water lily. So,should water lilies be grown in water or in soil? What should you do if its leaves dry up?
1. What is a water lily? What is its flower meaning?
The water lily is a world-class endangered plant, endemic to Taiwan, China. Its only native habitat in the world is distributed in a small village in Longtan Township, Taoyuan County, Taiwan, China.
The flower meaning of the water lily: a pure heart
The symbolism of the water lily: regarded as a symbol of soul liberation and rebirth.
2. Should water lilies be grown in water or in soil? How exactly should they be grown?
Water lilies are generally grown in a mix of soil and water, and can be propagated by sowing seeds or by using lotus roots. The sowing method is to cut a small opening in the seed, then sprout it in warm water, and once it germinates, plant the seedling into the soil. The lotus root method is to take out the lotus root from under the soil of the mother plant, cut off the part with nodes, store it in sand, and then replant it when spring comes and the temperature gradually rises.
1. Planting environment
As a member of the water lily family, it needs to be planted in mud. Before planting, add some base fertilizer to the bottom of the pot, then fill the pot with mud, and after filling with soil, add 2-3cm of water. Generally, use a flower pot with a larger diameter for care, which can leave more space for the floating leaves to receive light.
2. Sunlight
During the initial growth period, it needs sufficient sunlight, because this can quickly raise the temperature of the water surface, which is good for the germination of the underwater part. After the plant's floating leaves grow out, it needs even more sufficient light to produce the nutrients needed for the plant's growth.
3. Water
It is grown in water, so it does not need to be watered frequently. When the water level in the pot drops, you can add some water. Note that when adding water, the water temperature should be kept close to room temperature.
4. Fertilizing
It is a plant that likes fertilizer, so apply thin fertilizer frequently. Because its soil is underwater, you can use a tubular material such as a straw inserted into the soil, and then add the fertilizer into the soil through the straw.
3. What should you do if the leaves of a water lily dry up?
The main reasons for water lily leaves drying up are:
1. Insufficient light. During its normal growth process, it cannot do without a certain amount of light. If you place it in too dark an area at home and do not give it light for a long time, its leaves will of course dry up.
Therefore, sufficient light needs to be provided.
2. Poor ventilation. If you place it in a place at home with poor ventilation, and there is no wind or air circulation, the O2 in the water will be quickly consumed, and its leaves will turn yellow and dry.
Therefore, it should be placed in a ventilated place as soon as possible.
3. Temperature too low. It likes a warm environment. If it is winter, the weather is too cold, and it cannot safely make it through the winter. Its physiological activities slow down, and the speed of nutrient absorption also weakens. Its leaves will dry up, and if the situation is serious, it may even drop leaves to preserve nutrients.
Therefore, the temperature of the growing environment should be adjusted according to the situation.
