How to Eat Sea Cucumber? A Full Analysis of Foods It Should Not Be Eaten With and Precautions

The sea cucumber is an echinoderm that lives in the ocean. It is rich in nutritional value and is not only a precious ingredient but also a valuable medicinal material, ranked alongside ginseng, bird's nest and shark fin. So how do you eat sea cucumber? What foods should it not be eaten with? What precautions are there?

1. How to Eat Sea Cucumber

1. Eat it boiled

After soaking dried sea cucumber until rehydrated, or taking fresh ready-to-eat sea cucumber, put it into boiling water and simmer until the sea cucumber swells, becomes large and soft, then take it out. Cut the cooked sea cucumber into slices or strips, add seasonings such as sugar, table salt and chicken essence according to personal taste, mix well and plate it, and it is ready to eat. This simmering method preserves the nutrients of the sea cucumber to the greatest extent.

2. Eat it steamed

After soaking dried sea cucumber until rehydrated, or taking fresh ready-to-eat sea cucumber, put it into a steamer for about half an hour. After steaming, plate it, add other seasonings and side dishes, and it is ready to eat. This steaming method allows the nutrients of the sea cucumber to be preserved to a great extent.

3. Eat it in soup

Sea cucumber is more than suitable for making soup. After soaking dried sea cucumber until rehydrated, or taking fresh ready-to-eat sea cucumber, add mutton or beef or pork ribs, pour in clean water, then add ginger and goji berries and simmer together. First simmer over high heat for half an hour, then turn to low heat and simmer for one hour until the meat is thoroughly cooked. This soup-making method is the most common and can also preserve the nutrients of the sea cucumber to a great extent.

4. Eat it in congee

Add clean water to a pot, and after the water boils add millet. Once the millet is cooked into a congee consistency, put in dried sea cucumber after soaking until rehydrated, or take fresh ready-to-eat sea cucumber and place it in the pot, then pour in an appropriate amount of pure milk, add an appropriate amount of honey according to personal taste, and scoop it out to eat. Sea cucumber congee is very suitable for children who are not used to the taste of sea cucumber, and its nutrients are rich and varied.

5. Eat it stir-fried

Heat a wok and pour in oil. After the oil is hot, add dried sea cucumber after soaking until rehydrated, or take fresh ready-to-eat sea cucumber, add seasonings such as scallion, ginger and garlic, and stir-fry. This method is very suitable for people who like salty and spicy flavors. Sea cucumber meat is fresh and tasty and easily absorbs flavor, but this way of eating causes a loss of the sea cucumber's nutrients. If you care about the sea cucumber's nutrition, it is not recommended to eat it stir-fried.

6. Eat it fried

Heat a wok and pour in oil. After the oil is hot, add dried sea cucumber after soaking until rehydrated, or take fresh ready-to-eat sea cucumber, and after frying it until cooked, it is ready to eat. Fried sea cucumber has a crispy texture, but this is also the least healthy way to eat sea cucumber.

2. What Foods Sea Cucumber Should Not Be Eaten With

1. Acidic fruits

Sea cucumber contains a large amount of nutrients such as protein and calcium. Eating it at the same time as acidic fruits with high vitamin content, such as grapes, oranges, tangerines, hawthorn and pomegranate, will cause protein to coagulate, leading to indigestion and causing adverse symptoms such as abdominal pain, diarrhea and vomiting, and in severe cases may even cause gastrointestinal stones.

2. Vinegar

Acetic acid will cause the protein in sea cucumber to denature, which not only causes a loss of the sea cucumber's nutrients but also affects the sea cucumber's taste.

3. Licorice

Not only licorice: during the period of taking traditional Chinese medicine, it is not recommended to eat sea cucumber, otherwise it will affect the medicinal effect and is not conducive to health.

3. Precautions for Eating Sea Cucumber

1. During the period of preparing for pregnancy, sea cucumber can be eaten in an appropriate amount; it can strengthen nutrition, enhance physical fitness and also enhance sperm activity. However, during pregnancy and during the postpartum confinement period, it is not recommended to take sea cucumber, so as to avoid symptoms of internal heat.

2. Although sea cucumber is rich in nutrients, children and the elderly should also take sea cucumber according to their own physical condition. In particular, elderly people suffering from high blood pressure, high blood lipids and some chronic cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases need to strictly follow doctor's orders. When eating sea cucumber, if any adverse reaction occurs, they should immediately go to the hospital for examination and treatment.
