Although the budgerigar has rich and brilliant feather colors, it can still give people a sense of elegance that is beautiful without being gaudy, and the black stripes on its head and back that resemble tiger stripes add a touch of fierceness, making it one of the most popular caged birds at present. So how do you keep a budgerigar from flying away? Is it better to keep one or a pair?

I. Is it better to keep one budgerigar or a pair?

Budgerigars can be kept either singly or in pairs, but from the perspective of the budgerigar itself and of humane care, it is more advisable to keep them in pairs, unless the keeper can give the budgerigar a very sufficient amount of companionship.

The budgerigar is a very emotionally perceptive animal. If you keep only one, on the one hand the little creature easily gets lonely, and on the other hand the budgerigar sometimes feels itchy feathers, and at such times having a companion means they can scratch each other, so the quality of life will be somewhat higher. In addition, the average lifespan of a budgerigar is 7-10 years, which counts as a long-lived bird, so for office workers today who work nine to five and are often not at home, keeping them in pairs is naturally better.

But if you yourself are a beginner and are using the hand-raising method, then starting with 1 bird is also quite suitable.

II. How do you keep a budgerigar from flying away?

1. Choosing the cage

When keeping budgerigars, it is best to choose a birdcage built with an iron frame and lead wire mesh, so that they will not fly away. The cage should also be a large size, with horizontal perches and a nest box installed inside. As for the specific cage size, you can refer to 2 pairs of budgerigars per cubic meter.

2. Daily feeding

In daily feeding, you can give budgerigars hulled seeds such as foxtail millet, broomcorn millet, and barnyard millet, but you cannot feed only one kind alone; it is recommended to also prepare a good dietary combination for these little creatures, frequently feeding them some cabbage leaves, shredded carrot, as well as millet, red clay, sand grains, and so on.

3. Maintaining hygiene

When keeping budgerigars, bathing them and cleaning the cage are very necessary; especially for bathing, you should use warm water of about 30 degrees Celsius to give them a spray shower, and after washing them you must not directly put them under the sun to bake; instead, let their feathers dry naturally in an environment at a room temperature of about 10 degrees Celsius.

Warm reminder: If you want the budgerigar you keep to be able to “parrot” human speech, it is best to start raising it from a young parakeet, and a male budgerigar is preferable. In short, not all budgerigars can learn to talk, so keepers should not place too much hope on it, and in the face of these little lives, you should also feed them with a responsible attitude, remembering to feed and carefully care for them, so that the little parakeet will not fly away and will willingly follow you and become your companion in this world.
