When greasyback shrimp are mentioned, everyone surely knows them. They not only grow fast but are also highly adaptable, so many people farm them. To achieve high yields of greasyback shrimp, you must master the basic farming conditions and methods. So what are the methods for farming greasyback shrimp? How do you remove the shrimp vein?

I. Introduction to greasyback shrimp:

1. What kind of shrimp is the greasyback shrimp?

The greasyback shrimp is a seawater shrimp. In appearance it resembles the prawn, but its body is not as large as the prawn's. Its shell is relatively soft, and the meat it yields is delicious and refreshing, making it very popular. Juvenile shrimp are generally dark green or ink green, while adult shrimp are light coffee-yellow, so you must pay attention when buying to avoid getting white shrimp.

2. Which regions do greasyback shrimp come from?

The greasyback shrimp has many places of origin and is distributed both domestically and abroad. Abroad, it is native to Malaysia, Australia, Indonesia, the Philippines, and Japan. Domestically, it is mainly distributed in the coastal waters south of the Shandong Peninsula.

II. What are the methods for farming greasyback shrimp?

1. Site selection

Greasyback shrimp like to grow in areas with muddy bottoms, sandy bottoms, and sandy-mud bottoms, so when choosing a site, you can build a pond about 1.5 to 2 m high and put about 10 cm of silt at the bottom, then dig a ditch 4 m wide and 0.5 m deep around it to make drainage easier later.

2. Cleaning the pond

Before placing greasyback shrimp, thoroughly disinfect the pond with quicklime or bleaching powder to prevent bacteria from breeding and affecting shrimp growth. Generally, if the silt is thick, expose it to the sun for about one month in advance; if the silt is not very thick, drain the water and expose it to the sun for 2 to 3 days before adding water.

3. Fertilizing the pond

Greasyback shrimp have omnivorous feeding habits, but mainly feed on plankton, so one week before releasing the fry, apply a small amount of organic or inorganic fertilizer to cultivate feed, ensuring the biological feed needed for the shrimp's growth.

4. Releasing the fry

Greasyback shrimp like to grow in water temperatures of about 18 to 30 degrees, so it is best to release the fry in mid-May. Before releasing, it is best to keep the shrimp fry in lightly salted water for one week, then transfer them into the pond to increase the survival rate of the fry.

5. Farming management

After the shrimp fry enter the pond, do a good job with basic management tasks such as water quality, feed feeding, and disease prevention and control. The specific management techniques are as follows:

(1) Water quality requirements: About 10 days after the shrimp fry are stocked, add 10 cm of water every 5 days and adjust the pH value to 7 to 8 to improve water quality. Generally, it is best when the water color turns yellow-green. At the same time, sprinkle a small amount of quicklime or bleaching powder to disinfect and sterilize, preventing disease.

(2) Feed feeding: In the first month after the shrimp fry enter the pond, they mainly eat plankton. When the water temperature reaches 24 to 30 degrees, the greasyback shrimp's food intake gradually increases. At this time, feed artificial feed in a timely manner according to growth conditions, along with some trash fish, freshwater shellfish, and so on, to ensure sufficient food and let the shrimp fry grow quickly. Generally, feed 2 to 5 times a day, and the amount fed at night accounts for 60% of the daily feeding amount, ensuring sufficient food without waste.

(3) Strengthen management: During the growth period of greasyback shrimp, check the growth of the shrimp fry at any time, and regularly check the pond conditions to prevent the greasyback shrimp from lacking oxygen and floating to the surface.

(4) Disease prevention and control: During the growth period, greasyback shrimp may suffer from diseases such as rotten eye disease, rotten gill disease, and brown spot disease, so prevention and control measures must be taken during farming. Generally, for rotten eye disease or rotten gill disease, you can splash bleaching powder over the whole pond or make medicated feed with Shrimp Health No. 1 for feeding; for brown spot disease, you can mix and splash formalin for prevention and control.

6. Catching and harvesting

When greasyback shrimp have grown for about 70 days and reached a body size of 7 to 10 cm, they can be harvested in turns. When harvesting, try to do it in batches to avoid the size being too small and reducing returns.

III. How do you remove the shrimp vein from greasyback shrimp?

Method one, removing the shrimp vein with a toothpick: Removing the shrimp vein with a toothpick is one of the most common and quickest methods in daily life. The specific method is to find the middle position between the second-to-last and third-to-last segments of the shrimp body, then insert a toothpick and lift upward, then use your hand to pull out the entire shrimp vein and pinch it off to completely remove it.

Method two, removing the shrimp vein by peeling it live: This method is very simple, but rather bloody, so if you do not have a toothpick, you can use this method. The specific method is to pinch the shrimp's neck, then pull out the head together with the shrimp vein to remove it.

Overall, greasyback shrimp are very easy to farm. As long as you manage basic tasks such as water quality and feed feeding well, they can grow healthily. In addition, to thoroughly remove the shrimp vein, you can use either the toothpick method or the live-peeling method to successfully take it out.
