How to Grow Aloe Vera in Winter for Lush, Vigorous Growth? Detailed Care Tips
Aloe vera is an economical green plant that offers both flowers and foliage to enjoy. It is also relatively easy to grow and can be used medicinally and to purify the air, making it deeply loved by people. But growing aloe vera well takes the right methods, so how do you grow it for lush, vigorous growth? What are the winter care tips?
I. How do you grow aloe vera for lush, vigorous growth?
1. Principles of growing aloe vera
(1) Drought-tolerant, not waterlogging-tolerant
Aloe vera originates from Africa and the Mediterranean region and is a relatively drought-tolerant plant, but it is not tolerant of waterlogging, so when growing it, it is better to keep it dry than damp.
(2) Likes warmth, not cold-tolerant
Likewise, aloe vera can only grow healthily in a warm environment with plenty of sunlight, and in a cold environment it is prone to problems such as rot and drying out.
2. Daily care for growing aloe vera
(1) Soil preparation
When growing aloe vera, it is best to prepare a special soil mix. You can mix some river sand, plant ash and garden soil, and if conditions permit, you can also appropriately add shell pieces or bone meal.
(2) Choosing a pot
When growing aloe vera, remember never to use a plastic pot: it is not breathable and drains poorly, easily causing water accumulation, soil compaction and root rot in aloe vera. It is best to choose a clay pot, which is more suitable for aloe vera growth.
(3) Proper light, water and fertilizer
When growing aloe vera, be careful not to “overdo” the light, water and fertilizer. Usually, just place the aloe vera in a spot with plenty of indirect light but no direct sunlight. In hot weather, water it 2-3 times a week; in severely cold weather, water it about once every 20 days; and normally, watering once a week is fine. Aloe vera does not need much fertilizer; spraying a liquid fertilizer once a month can effectively promote its growth.
II. What are the winter care tips?
1. Strengthen temperature control
The temperature for aloe vera to overwinter safely must be kept at at least above 5°C, but to be on the safe side, it is best to keep it above 10°C to avoid frost damage.
2. Pay attention to water control
In winter, be sure to reduce the amount of water you give aloe vera. Basically, if you are not running the heating or air conditioning often, watering thoroughly once a month is no problem. Normally, when you see that the soil is very dry, you can give it a little water to keep the soil slightly moist.
3. Strengthen light supplementation
Due to China's climate, winter daylight hours are relatively short in most regions. If you want aloe vera to grow vigorously, then on sunny days you need to give it a thorough “sunbath”, so that even in winter you do not have to worry about aloe vera's growth stalling.
Warm tip: For keeping aloe vera warm in winter, you can refer to measures such as covering it with plastic film, setting up a solar greenhouse, digging a pit, or placing it on a radiator, but while keeping it warm, you should also take the light factor into account!
