What month should you propagate snake plant cuttings? Learn to grow it this way for fast, lush, pot-filling growth
Snake plant not only releases oxygen but can also absorb carbon dioxide, formaldehyde and other gases from the air, making it a “scavenger” of indoor air. Snake plant is also relatively easy to propagate and cultivate, so what month can snake plant be propagated? How should you grow it for fast, lush, pot-filling growth?
1. What month can snake plant be propagated?
1. Propagation time for snake plant
Snake plant can be propagated either by “soil cuttings” or by “water cuttings”. As for timing, you just need to avoid the cold winter, because winter temperatures are lower and snake plant is relatively difficult to root from cuttings. However, the most suitable time for propagating snake plant is from early May to mid-June each year, when the survival rate is highest.
2. Which is better for snake plant, “water cuttings” or “soil cuttings”?
In terms of rooting time, “water cuttings” are faster than “soil cuttings”. Roots generally begin to emerge in about 1 week, and after about 1 month the root system has grown fairly dense. Soil cuttings are slower, and it generally takes 1-2 months to grow a lush root system.
(1) Caring for snake plant “water cuttings”
The most important thing with “water cuttings” is changing the water. Generally, change the water once a week, and do not directly use freshly drawn tap water; let it sit for about 2 hours before changing. If you want faster rooting, you can also add a little rooting powder to the water.
(2) Caring for snake plant “soil cuttings”
Choose river sand or vermiculite as the cutting medium, then insert the cuttings upright into the medium, place them in a ventilated spot with natural light, and keep the medium moist. Be careful not to water too much and cause waterlogging, as this is not good for rooting.
2. How should you grow snake plant for fast, lush, pot-filling growth?
1. Choose a suitable flower pot
As the saying goes, to do a good job, one must first sharpen one's tools. If you want to grow snake plant lush and pot-filling, choosing the flower pot is very important.
Snake plant has a relatively large plant form, so you should choose a flower pot with a wider and deeper opening. Taking breathability into overall consideration, a ceramic pot is best.
2. Control the amount of watering
Snake plant is a drought-tolerant plant, so you must not overwater it, otherwise the roots and leaves easily rot. Generally, when the weather is not especially hot, you can water once a week; in summer, you can water once every 1-2 days.
3. Provide sufficient light
Although snake plant can survive in places with less sunlight, if you want pot-filling growth you must give it sufficient light. Even in midsummer, there is no need to shade it; just make sure the soil has a certain degree of moisture.
4. Fertilize appropriately
Generally, snake plant can be grown without fertilizing, but it will grow more slowly. Fertilizing can promote the growth of snake plant and achieve the goal of pot-filling growth.
Liquid flower fertilizer is suitable, and it can be applied once every half month, but note that each application must not be excessive, to avoid fertilizer burn damaging the roots.
Friendly reminder: Snake plant has many varieties, such as golden-edged snake plant, walker snake plant, original-leaf snake plant, large samurai snake plant, golden flame snake plant and so on. They each have their own differences in care, so gardening friends still need to gradually explore the growth patterns of their own snake plants!
