The popular money tree actually has another name——Zamioculcas zamiifolia. Besides buying mature plants directly from the flower market, you can also propagate the money tree yourself. So how do you propagate a money tree? And how should you care for it in winter so it doesn't die?

I. How do you propagate a money tree?

Usually, the money tree can be propagated through “division” and “cuttings.” Let's take a look at the specific steps below.

1. Money tree propagation by division

(1) Time for division

Dividing a money tree is best done in mid-to-late April, when the average daily temperature can remain around 20 degrees Celsius. A sunny day is preferable, as this is more favorable for survival after division.

(2) Division method

From a pot of money trees, choose a larger, healthy plant with more branches, take it out with its roots, clean off the soil, and then use a knife to split it into two or three parts at the point where the tubers connect most weakly and the leaves are relatively even (note: do not divide into more than 3 parts).

When dividing, apply sulfur powder or carbendazim, potassium permanganate, plant ash, etc. to the wounds for disinfection and sterilization.

2. Money tree propagation by cuttings

(1) Time for cuttings

Division is the fastest way to propagate a money tree; by comparison, propagation by cuttings is much slower.

Money tree cuttings are best taken in spring. Choose healthy, plump, dark green mature leaves as cuttings, and disinfect the wounds after cutting the leaves.

(2) Cutting method

Propagation by cuttings requires a specially prepared cutting medium. You can mix peat soil, perlite, and coarse sand in a 3:1:1 ratio, then insert 1/5 of the disinfected cutting leaf into the medium.

II. How should you care for a money tree in winter?

1. Pay attention to keeping it warm

Winter in most parts of China is quite cold, which is a major challenge for the growth of the money tree, because the money tree is not very tolerant of low temperatures and is prone to cold damage. Therefore, if the money tree is grown outdoors, it should be moved indoors or into a greenhouse, and the temperature should be adjusted to above 10 degrees Celsius.

2. Pay attention to light

Light is generally lacking in winter, and sometimes there is no sun for more than ten days in a row, so light can be supplemented appropriately.

3. Pay attention to watering

When growing a money tree in winter, be sure to reduce the amount and frequency of watering. Otherwise, it is very easy to cause root rot or plant wilting.

In addition, there is no need to fertilize the money tree in winter, because fertilizing at low temperatures is on the one hand not conducive to absorption, and on the other hand may damage the roots of the money tree.
