How to Raise a Snapping Turtle So It Grows Fast? These Taboos to Note When Keeping One at Home
The snapping turtle, native to North America, is favored by turtle farmers in our country for its adaptability, strong disease resistance and rapid growth. Besides large-scale farming for food, the snapping turtle has also become a fairly popular ornamental turtle species, and it can now be said to combine food, ornamental and medicinal uses in one, with significant economic value. So how do you raise a snapping turtle so it grows fast? What taboos are there to keeping one at home?
I. How do you raise a snapping turtle so it grows fast?
1. Prepare the rearing equipment
Generally speaking, the snapping turtle has strong vitality and fears neither cold nor heat; it can grow normally and safely at -6-42°C. Therefore, the rearing equipment does not need to be demanding, and usually jars, basins, small ponds, fish tanks and the like are all fairly suitable for keeping snapping turtles.
It is worth noting that if it is a newly built cement pond, it must be cleaned thoroughly with clean water and then dried in the sun for about 5 days before being put into use, and
a layer of clean mud and sand about 30 cm thick should be spread on the bottom of the pond, and a fence should be put up properly to prevent the snapping turtle from escaping.
2. Daily feeding
Although the snapping turtle is an amphibian, unlike other turtles it tends to live in water. Therefore, when feeding, the food should be put into the water or placed at the water's edge. Under artificial rearing conditions, the snapping turtle has low requirements for bait, and generally feeding it livestock and poultry offal and cheap meat or vegetarian food is enough.
It is advisable to feed at 9-10 a.m. and 3-5 p.m. When feeding, the water temperature can be kept at around 20°C, at which time its appetite will be better. In addition, in early spring and late autumn, reduce the feeding of the snapping turtle, and change the water on the second or third day after feeding.
3. Daily management
When raising snapping turtles, daily management work mainly includes water quality monitoring and routine checks; it is enough that the water quality is clean and the oxygen supply is sufficient. But be careful to change the water and disinfect the rearing equipment regularly.
II. What taboos are there to keeping a snapping turtle at home?
1. Do not let children touch it
The snapping turtle grows very fast, but as a cold-blooded carnivorous animal, its aggressiveness increases day by day as its body size grows. Therefore, if there are younger children at home, it is advisable not to keep a snapping turtle or to take good isolation measures to avoid biting the children.
2. Do not keep too many
If you keep snapping turtles at home, it is advisable not to keep more than 3, otherwise it is neither convenient to manage nor conducive to the snapping turtles getting better care.
3. Do not keep them mixed with other turtle species
In addition, it is not advisable to keep snapping turtles mixed with other turtle species, so as to avoid a “tragedy of killing each other”.
4. Do not keep snapping turtles in the bedroom
Many snapping turtle enthusiasts like to keep snapping turtles in the bedroom, but doing so will increase the humidity of the room, breed bacteria in the room, and the snapping turtles are also active at night, which will affect people's normal sleep and health.
