Crayfish are a fairly common type of shrimp in our country, and since they have plenty of meat and can be prepared in many ways, they are very popular, especially in summer when they make a great specialty snack. Currently they are being farmed in many regions, so what do crayfish eat to grow fast? How do you clean them most thoroughly?

I. Introduction to crayfish:

1. Are crayfish seafood?

Crayfish are divided into large lobsters and small crayfish. Generally, small crayfish are not seafood, because small crayfish are a type of river shrimp; only large lobsters like the Australian lobster count as seafood.

2. Where do crayfish live?

Crayfish have strong adaptability and are generally more common in paddy fields, lakes, rivers, canals, ponds and similar places. In a word, even in places where fish find it hard to survive, crayfish can still live healthily.

II. What do crayfish eat to grow fast?

1. Wild crayfish: Wild crayfish are omnivorous shrimp. Generally, when they are fry they grow by eating algae on the bottom, and once they grow into juvenile shrimp they live on aquatic plants on the bottom, plant roots, aquatic insects, dead small fish and so on. Of course, when food is insufficient, they will even eat their own kind.

2. Farmed crayfish: Farmed crayfish are relatively cleaner and generally grow up being fed various feeds, such as small fish, phytoplankton, algae, earthworms, miscellaneous fish, corn, soybean cake and so on, so they can be said to be very easy to farm.

(1) Plant-based feed: Newly hatched shrimp generally feed on their own remaining yolk, and when they grow a little they eat various small phytoplankton and so on. Once they grow into adult shrimp, they mainly eat plankton, algae, aquatic plants, straw, corn, wheat, soybean cake, organic debris and so on, and they also eat various fresh tender aquatic plants such as pondweed, water hyacinth, eelgrass and duckweed.

(2) Animal-based food: They mainly eat various fresh miscellaneous fish, small shrimp, livestock and poultry offal, earthworms, river snails, snails and mussels and other animal-based bait.

(3) Artificial feed: They mainly eat various feeds mixed from soybean, corn, soybean cake, bran and so on.

In short, crayfish can eat all the foods that various shrimp can eat, but it is worth noting that crayfish are omnivorous animals and will kill each other when food is lacking, so when farming them artificially you must ensure food is sufficient.

III. How do you wash crayfish most thoroughly?

Since crayfish are omnivorous animals, they contain a large amount of bacteria, so they must be cleaned thoroughly before eating. The specific cleaning methods are as follows:

Method 1, vinegar + salt: Put salt, vinegar and crayfish together in water and soak for 15 minutes to let the crayfish spit out the dirt in their gills, then take them out and rinse them with water several times, then scrub the shells and legs with a brush and they are clean.

Method 2, wash them yourself: Generally, crayfish in restaurants are not cleaned thoroughly, so if you feel uneasy about it, you can buy them and clean them yourself. Although it is a bit more troublesome to wash, they come out clean. The specific steps are as follows:

Step 1: Rinse the crayfish you bought under the tap several times so the mud and sand on the surface are completely washed away. Then put them in the refrigerator to freeze for half an hour.

Step 2: After half an hour, take out the crayfish, then use a toothbrush or a special brush to clean the surface of the crayfish. In particular, the head and thorax, the joints of the shell, the gaps in the claws, all the joints and the tail must be scrubbed carefully. Of course, you can also first cut off the crayfish claws, then scrub with a brush.

Step 3: Hold the washed crayfish with one hand, then use scissors to cut forcefully open the underside of the raised vertical spine on the crayfish head and remove the stomach sac. Be careful not to remove the shrimp roe, so as to avoid losing nutritional value.

Step 4: Pinch the crayfish tail with your hand, break off the middle one of the five tail fins, then slowly pull it out to remove the digestive tract.

Step 5: Finally, rinse with water several more times and it is done.

Overall, crayfish eat small fish, earthworms, algae, phytoplankton, fresh tender aquatic plants and so on, so they are very easy to feed. In addition, crayfish are very dirty, so they must be cleaned thoroughly before eating. If you do not know how to wash them, you can follow the steps above to clean them, and then you can eat them with peace of mind.
