The primary condition for raising cattle well is to do a good job of cattle farm sanitation, so as to achieve the goal of healthy cattle farming. The environment around the cattle barn, including the exercise yard, should be disinfected once a week with 2% caustic soda or sprinkled with quicklime. Below is an introduction to key points for cattle farming: sanitation management on cattle farms!

I. Site Selection

The cattle farm should have a perimeter wall. The production area, office area, and living area must be separated. Disinfection pools should be set up at the entrance of each area. The manure storage site, sick cattle barn, and veterinary room should be located more than 200 m away from the cattle barn, in a remote area downwind. The cattle farm should be situated on high, dry, flat, and spacious terrain, and its location should be more than 1000 m away from major traffic roads, hospitals, factories, and residential areas.

II. Disinfection System

The disinfection pools at the farm gate and the entrance of each area must always contain high-concentration disinfectant solution, which must be replaced frequently. Workers entering the production area must change their clothes, hats, and shoes, and undergo ultraviolet disinfection for 15 minutes before entering to work. All workers and vehicles on the farm must pass through the disinfection pool. The cattle barn must be kept clean and hygienic at all times, free of odors and ammonia gas, and well ventilated. Disinfection should be carried out once every 15 days. Cattle troughs and utensils must be scrubbed frequently and disinfected.

III. Disinfection Methods

1. Spray disinfection: Use hypochlorite, peracetic acid, organic iodine mixtures, benzalkonium bromide, etc. at a certain concentration, and apply spray disinfection with a spraying device. This is mainly used for spraying disinfection after the cattle barn has been cleaned, disinfection of the environment with cattle present, and disinfection of cattle farm roads, the surrounding area, and vehicles entering the farm area;

2. Soaking disinfection: Use an aqueous solution of benzalkonium bromide and organic iodine mixture at a certain concentration to wash hands, work clothes, or rubber boots;

3. Ultraviolet disinfection: Ultraviolet lamps are permanently installed at personnel entrances for irradiation to achieve a sterilizing effect;

4. Dusting disinfection: Sprinkle quicklime or caustic soda around the cattle barn, at entrances, and under calving pens and cattle beds to kill bacteria and viruses.

IV. Immunization and Quarantine

Cattle must be purchased from non-epidemic areas. Before purchase, they must be quarantined by the local quarantine department, which issues a quarantine certificate. Only after the vehicles and animals have been disinfected can they enter the farm. After being observed in the isolation barn for 15 days and confirmed to be healthy and free of disease, they can be merged into the herd for feeding. The cattle farm should, in accordance with the requirements of the “Animal Epidemic Prevention Law of the People's Republic of China” and supporting regulations, and in light of local actual conditions, selectively carry out preventive vaccination against epidemic diseases, and pay attention to selecting appropriate vaccines, immunization procedures, and immunization methods. At least 2 vaccinations against anthrax and 2 vaccinations against foot-and-mouth disease are required each year.

V. Handling of Dead Cattle and Waste

For sick cattle caused by non-infectious diseases or mechanical trauma, timely treatment should be given. Dead cattle should be promptly subjected to harmless treatment at designated locations. After an infectious disease occurs on the cattle farm, sick cattle should be isolated promptly, and dead cattle should undergo harmless treatment in accordance with the provisions of GB16548. A manure storage tank should be set up in the downwind area of the production zone within the farm area. Manure and other waste should be managed in an orderly manner. Bedding, waste, and manure in the cattle barn and exercise yard should be removed promptly every day, and manure and waste should be transported to the manure storage tank. Facilities for treating cattle manure and urine, bedding, and waste should be set up on the farm. Waste should follow the principles of reduction, harmlessness, and resource utilization.
