Pigs are one of the important livestock, and people's demand for them is great. For this reason, there are many farmers who raise them, but pigs are very afraid of heat. In the midsummer season, they are very prone to losing weight, and in severe cases they die of heatstroke. Therefore, heat prevention and cooling work must be done well. So, how can pigs be raised in midsummer without losing weight?

1. How can pigs be raised in midsummer without losing weight?

1. Shade and escape the heat: Summer weather is very hot, and most rural pig houses are open-style, but pigs have thick subcutaneous fat and underdeveloped sweat glands, so they are very prone to heatstroke. Therefore, farmers can build a temporary shade shed for the pig house to prevent direct sunlight and achieve the purpose of shading and escaping the heat.

2. Cool the pig house: Use cool water to wash the ground and walls inside the pen to lower the house temperature; all ventilation holes in the pig house can be opened to let air flow through from all sides, which can lower the house temperature and make the pigs cool and comfortable.

3. Bathing to dissipate heat: Rinsing the pig's body with water can help the pig dissipate heat. Note that water must not be suddenly sprayed on the pig's head, to prevent severe contraction of the blood vessels in the pig's head and shock; a shallow pool can also be dug in a corner of the pig house, filled with clean water, and the pigs can soak in the pool themselves to dissipate heat.

4. Drinking water to regulate temperature: When it is hot, they need to drink more water. Water makes up one third to one half of a pig's body weight. In summer, a pig's daily water intake is 23.8% of its own body weight. It can drink 0.5% saline water, which can regulate body temperature.

5. Drinks to relieve summer heat: Every day, pigs can be fed a little vinegar or sauerkraut juice, white hyacinth beans, mung bean soup, watermelon rind juice, etc. Vinegar and sauerkraut juice can stimulate appetite, white hyacinth beans can relieve summer heat and strengthen the stomach, mung bean soup can clear heat and relieve summer heat, and watermelon rind juice clears summer heat and relieves heat.

6. Adjust the feed structure: In order to keep the pigs' appetite in good condition, the daily feed structure of the pigs can be adjusted by reducing energy feed and increasing green feed. It is better for energy feed and green feed to each account for 50%.

7. Adjust feeding time: Since the daytime temperature is very high and the pigs have a poor appetite, they can be fed at night. Feeding can be carried out at 7 p.m., 11 p.m., and 4 a.m., for 3 feedings. During the day, they can be fed salt water and green, juicy feed. The pigs will not only avoid losing weight, but will also gain meat.

8. Reduce stocking density: If stocking density is too high, the pigs' breathing and body surface heat dissipation will make the heat rise higher and higher, and it is very easy to cause collective heatstroke and disease. Therefore, stocking density should be appropriately reduced.

2. What pig diseases need to be prevented and controlled in summer pig farming?

1. Eperythrozoonosis

Symptoms: It occurs frequently in summer, mainly spread through the bites of blood-sucking insects. Pigs with reduced resistance are susceptible to the disease. It is an acute, febrile infectious disease caused by Eperythrozoon suis. Clinically, it is characterized by fever, anemia, jaundice, difficulty breathing, reddening of the skin, or extreme weakness of the pig, and in severe cases it can lead to death.

Prevention and control: Do a good job of eliminating mosquitoes, flies, ticks, lice, fleas, and other blood-sucking insects; feed high-nutrition complete feed to maintain the health of the pig herd; strengthen environmental sanitation and disinfection, and keep the pig house clean and hygienic; after onset, tetracycline drugs such as oxytetracycline, doxycycline, and chlortetracycline can be used for treatment.

2. Swine erysipelas

Symptoms: It occurs more often in hot seasons, especially from March to September each year, which is a high-risk period for the disease. It is an acute, febrile zoonotic infectious disease caused by Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae. In the early stage, it is mostly acute septicemic type or subacute urticarial type, and then turns into chronic type. Affected pigs often develop arthritis and endocarditis, and in severe cases it can lead to death.

Prevention and control: Once it occurs, first inject a large dose of penicillin intramuscularly, add amoxicillin to the feed, and inject vaccine after the epidemic subsides.

3. Swine influenza

Symptoms: Autumn and winter are high-incidence periods, but it can spread throughout the year; it is an acute, contagious respiratory disease of pigs caused by influenza A virus (type A influenza virus), characterized by sudden onset, coughing, difficulty breathing, fever, and rapid recovery. It usually breaks out among pigs and is highly contagious but usually does not cause death.

Prevention and control: Isolate affected pigs; disinfect the pig house; inject swine influenza adjuvanted inactivated vaccine.

Summary: Because summer temperatures are high, farmers should not only pay attention to heat prevention and cooling, but also adjust the pigs' feed structure, adjust feeding time, and reduce stocking density, so as to achieve the goal of preventing weight loss. In addition, attention should also be paid to the prevention and control of pig diseases.
