The vast world is full of wonders, and there are always some creatures you have never seen before and that seem very strange once you learn about them. So, what strange creatures exist in the world? Do you know all of the following?

1. Vampire fish

[Region found] Myanmar

[Time found] 2009

The vampire fish is a small cyprinid fish found in Myanmar. It is estimated to have been reproducing on Earth for nearly 100 million years. Because it grows sharp teeth and resembles the vampires of European legend, it is jokingly called the “vampire fish”. The vampire fish is not large, and it is not beautiful either, but this small fish is very peculiar. This small fish, only 1.7 cm in body length, has vampire-like fangs on its upper and lower jaws. It is the only fish among more than 3,700 species of cypriniform fishes that has sharp teeth. The large teeth of males come in handy when fighting over territory, and female vampire fish also use their sharp teeth in fights.

2. Psychedelic frogfish

[Region found] Coastal waters near Ambon Island, Indonesia

[Time found] 2009

The psychedelic frogfish is a very peculiar marine fish. Its facial outline may have a sensory structure, much like cat whiskers, with keen perceptive ability. Through the sensory structure along its facial outline, this fish can sense the condition of some stone walls inside undersea caves, making it easier to explore narrow spaces among coral reefs. What is peculiar about it is that it is not only good at hiding, but can also escape danger by jetting propulsion. The skin of the psychedelic frogfish is gelatinous, appearing plump, fleshy, thick, and soft. Its skin is covered with white stripes, and these white stripes spread radially from the eyes toward the body. This white pigment can make its skin colors even more brilliant and colorful, making it easier to blend into the colorful poisonous coral thickets on the seabed to seek shelter.

3. Elephant shrew

[Region found] Africa

[Time found] 2006

The elephant shrew, also called the jumping shrew, has a long and flexible snout (also called a proboscis). Because all elephant shrews are named for having a relatively long trunk-like nose, the nose is extremely sensitive in touch and smell. The elephant shrew also has fairly good hearing and vision. It is small in size and must constantly stay active. They make their living by preying on insects. Their body length is 17 to 58 cm, and they have soft fur and a pair of large eyes. They are lively by nature and quick in movement. Elephant shrews live in dry, rocky areas of Africa and are one of the 15 “living fossil species” on Earth.

4. Mudskipper

Mudskippers generally refer to mudskippers and mud monkeys. There are 25 species of mudskippers in the world. They are a kind of ancient fish animal with a relatively low degree of evolution. Mudskippers like to run around under the scorching sun, so they need to keep their bodies moist at all times, otherwise they will die. Mudskippers must often keep their bodies moist to prevent dangerous dehydration. Therefore, all activities of mudskippers are carried out around water pools. Mudskippers spend much of their lives out of water. Mudskippers use their pelvic fins as suckers to grip trees, and use their pectoral fins to crawl upward. Around the gills of mudskippers grow small pouches that can hold water for one breath. They climb trees, so they can stay outside the water area when the tide rises.

The above are several kinds of strange creatures in the world compiled for you by the editor. Do you understand them all?
