The World's Weirdest Animals: Every One Beyond Imagination
The world is vast and full of wonders: there are strange appearances, strange names, and strange behaviors. Only what you cannot see does not exist in this world. So, which animals are rather strange? Here is a countdown of the world's strangest animals.
1. Animals with strange appearances
1. One-eyed shark
The one-eyed shark was discovered by local fishermen off the coast of California, USA, on October 18, 2011. It has only one eye and also suffers from albinism, with a body that is snow-white all over. In fact, this shark has a congenital condition called “cyclopia” and is a malformed individual among sharks.
2. Blobfish
The blobfish lives off the coasts of Australia and Tasmania, at depths of up to 1,200 m on the sea floor. Because it has a mournful face, it is called the “saddest-looking” fish in the world.
3. Beluga whale
The beluga whale mainly lives in the waters of Europe, the US state of Alaska and northern Canada. Its body color is very pale, a unique white. Compared with other whales, when its skin takes on a pale yellow tone in summer, it can molt.
4. Glass frog
Glass frogs are mainly scattered in the montane cloud forests of Central and South America. Their skin is transparent, and even their bellies are transparent, so their organs, bones and blood vessels can be seen directly; some glass frogs have green bones, while in others even the other organs are transparent.
5. Maned wolf
The maned wolf is mainly distributed in Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Paraguay and Peru, inhabiting tall grasslands, scrub and similar places. It looks like a wolf and a fox, yet it is neither a wolf nor a fox, but a rare canine species.
6. Tapir
The tapir is the most primitive surviving odd-toed ungulate, distributed in both Southeast Asia and Latin America. It retains primitive features such as four toes on the forelimbs and three on the hindlimbs, has a pig-like build, is black and white in color, though some are dark brown, is covered with bristly hair, has a short retractable snout, and is good at swimming and diving.
7. Okapi
The okapi is distributed only in a very few areas of Congo and Uganda. It has a long neck like a giraffe, zebra-like stripes on its rear, and also a long tongue like a giraffe's, which it can use to clean its eyes and ears. It is an interesting animal.
8. White-faced saki
The white-faced saki lives in countries such as Brazil, French Guiana and Venezuela. It looks bizarre, with a white face and black body. It has special abilities: not only an unmatched digestive capacity, but also the ability to deal with all kinds of venoms and toxins, and so it is called the “king of anti-venom”.
2. Animals with strange names
1. Sea lily
The sea lily is an echinoderm first seen in the Early Cambrian, an invertebrate that lives in the sea. Its body has tentacles like fern leaves, and because it looks like a plant, people took it for a plant and so gave it a plant name, sea lily.
2. White's tree frog
White's tree frog is mainly active at night and hides under the leaves of broadleaf trees during the day. It gets its name because the adult is plump and round, with drooping skin and flesh on both sides of the forehead and a wide mouth that turns slightly upward, making it look just like a grinning old man.
3. Dumbo octopus
The Dumbo octopus lives in the deep sea, at depths of 2,816-3,932 m, making it one of the deepest-distributed known cephalopod species. It gets its name because it has two “ears” and a long “nose”, and looks much like Dumbo in the Disney animated film.
4. Coconut crab
The coconut crab lives in tropical woods near the sea. It is the largest terrestrial arthropod and the largest terrestrial crab, and is an expert tree climber. It gets its name because it climbs straight coconut palms and can use its strong pincers to peel open hard coconut shells and eat the coconut flesh inside.
5. Panda ant
The panda ant was first discovered in Chile in 1938, and is also distributed in the desert regions of Mexico. It is not a true ant, but a wingless, furry kind of wasp, and gets its name because it looks somewhat like a panda.
3. Animals with strange behaviors
1. Batfish
Batfish are distributed in tropical and temperate seas, and the waters near Malaysia are one of the gathering spots for “batfish”. Although it is a fish, it uses its pectoral and pelvic fins to walk, and when in danger or startled it hops away like a frog.
2. Red-lipped batfish
The red-lipped batfish lives in the waters of the Galapagos Islands. Although it is a fish, it has flaming red lips and four “legs”, and uses its pectoral fins to “walk” on the sea floor. As an adult, its dorsal fin grows into a spine-like horn that it projects to lure prey.
3. Pacu
The pacu mainly lives in the Amazon Basin and the Orinoco Basin. It belongs to the piranha group, but although it is a piranha, it eats only ripe fruit and nuts that fall into the water. Because human testicles resemble nuts that have fallen into the water, they may be attacked, hence the common name “ball-cutter fish”.
The above is a countdown of the world's strangest animals, and we hope it is useful to everyone.
