What should you do when chickens in a farming operation have indigestion and diarrhea, and what medicine works fast?
Indigestion and diarrhea are both common conditions that frequently occur in chicken farming and can easily lead to not eating, not gaining weight, and reduced farming profits. So what should you do when chickens show indigestion and diarrhea? What medicine works fast?
1. Symptoms and causes of indigestion and diarrhea in chickens
1. Manifestations of indigestion in chickens
When chickens have indigestion, their intestines cannot fully absorb the nutrients in the feed, so small feed particles remain in the droppings; for example, when a large amount of corn remains, the droppings appear yellow. The causes of this situation include, but are not limited to, the following:
(1) Improper feed feeding by the farmer or other causes of intestinal damage. The feed consumed by chickens must meet their growth requirements, and improper rearing can also easily cause intestinal damage, leading to inflammation in the intestines and thus the appearance of feed droppings;
(2) Inflammation caused by diseases such as tapeworms, nematodes, and small intestinal coccidia. The occurrence of these diseases directly causes intestinal damage and triggers inflammation, reducing digestive function, and can also lead to indigestion;
(3) Intestinal bacteria, mycotoxins, and other factors in chicks affect digestive function, thereby causing indigestion.
2. Manifestations of diarrhea in chickens
Diarrhea in chickens can include white watery droppings, green watery droppings, brown or dark brown watery droppings, foamy watery droppings, watery stool, and watery soft droppings. Different situations are caused by different reasons:
(1) Watery droppings caused by improper feed allocation or difficult digestion in the flock;
(2) Cases caused by cecal coccidia, small intestinal coccidia, aflatoxin poisoning, arsenic poisoning, etc., with intestinal bleeding and bloody droppings;
(3) When the salt content in chicken feed is too high, diarrhea, convulsions, and sticky fluid flowing from the mouth occur;
(4) Cases caused by avian influenza, acute typhoid, epidemic diseases, inflammation, etc., with green, foul-smelling watery droppings, emaciation, and poor growth and development.
2. What should you do when chickens show indigestion and diarrhea?
1. Solutions for indigestion in chickens
(1) Use chloramphenicol or other antibacterial drugs, pay attention to preventing heatstroke and cooling, reduce heat stress, and control water intake.
(2) Appropriately add probiotics to chicken feed and regularly add grit; the amount can increase as the chickens grow, which can improve the digestive ability of the chickens.
2. Solutions for diarrhea in chickens
(1) Give sick chickens oral rehydration salts. Prepare the oral rehydration salts into a solution according to the instructions and let the chickens drink it freely. This is effective for replenishing the water lost from the chickens' bodies due to diarrhea, improving the chickens' resistance, and reducing mortality.
(2) Add an appropriate amount of charcoal powder to chicken feed, such as wood charcoal powder, charred steamed bun, or charred corn (made by roasting corn cakes or steamed buns until scorched and grinding them into powder), which can effectively relieve diarrhea symptoms. The added amount should preferably account for 2%-3% of the daily ration.
(3) Feed chickens garlic. Feeding an appropriate amount of garlic can not only sterilize and inhibit bacteria, but also enhance the chickens' immune resistance and supplement some vitamins. It has a certain effect on diarrhea in chickens caused by pathogenic bacterial infection.
3. What medicine should chickens with indigestion and diarrhea take to get better quickly?
1. For indigestion in chickens, you can feed Changdu Kexing, Shengfeng Wang, anticoccidial drugs, and so on.
2. For diarrhea in chickens, you can use Fuzheng Jiedu San, Fuhuan (300 jin water/bottle) + kidney-supporting medicine, for 3-5 consecutive days; Shenzhi Ning, baking soda in drinking water, norfloxacin in drinking water; Zhili San mixed into chicken feed, and so on.
In fact, there are many causes of indigestion and diarrhea in chickens, so everyone should use different medicines according to different causes. Only by treating the cause can the chicks get better quickly.
