When is the best time to dock a piglet's tail?
Tail docking in piglets is usually carried out within 1-2 days after birth. The recovery period after tail docking in piglets is very fast, taking only 10-15 days. Before the tail docking surgery, it is necessary to prepare tools that have been sterilized at high temperature, such as a scalpel, single-edge blade, cotton, alcohol, gentian violet, etc. The surgical procedure is very simple, and the following methods can be used for tail docking:
1. Cut it off with scissors
Using scissors for tail docking is a fairly traditional old method. First disinfect the scissors and the piglet's tail area. It is best to prepare sharp scissors, as this can reduce the piglet's pain. After the tail is cut off, disinfect and bandage it immediately to avoid infection.
2. Burn off the pig's tail
Using the tail-burning method to dock piglets' tails makes them less prone to bacterial infection, but the piglets are easily scalded. The branding iron must be heated well, and the job must be done quickly and accurately. The biggest advantage of this method is that the burned-off tail is very unlikely to grow back.
3. Slowly strangle it off with an elastic band
This is a chronic method and takes a relatively long time. Its biggest advantage is that there is no pain. Tie the elastic band around the tail, so that the piglet's tail naturally falls off due to long-term lack of nutrition.
