What to Do About Cow Infertility? Cause Analysis and Solutions
The value of cows on a farm lies mainly in calving and milk production. If a dairy cow is infertile and cannot calve, it affects profitability in dairy farming. So what are the causes of and solutions for dairy cow infertility?
1. Incomplete nutrition. Sometimes, because the dairy cow's feed is too monotonous, the cow becomes infertile due to insufficient nutrition.
Solution: If the cow is infertile due to malnutrition, supplementary feeding needs to be strengthened to provide the cow with sufficient nutrition. But be careful not to overfeed. The cow's diet should be based mainly on roughage, with concentrates given in appropriate amounts.
2. Congenital underdevelopment. Many cows, due to congenital or acquired developmental reasons, may have abnormalities of the reproductive organs, or developmental deformities that lead to infertility.
Solution: If a cow cannot reproduce due to a congenital disease, it is recommended to replace the cow for breeding.
3. Improper management. Sometimes poor environmental hygiene can cause cow infertility. If the cow is kept tethered for a long time, so that it gets too little exercise, infertility may also occur. After a cow calves, if it is not weaned in time and the lactation period is too long, this may also affect the next pregnancy.
Solution: Manage the hygiene of the cow shed well, clean and disinfect it regularly, and ensure good ventilation. Appropriately increase the cow's amount of exercise. After calving is completed, wean the calf in time.
4. The cow is too old. A cow is best bred and calved in its prime; in old age it will become infertile. This situation occurs not only in cows, but in almost all animals.
Solution: If infertility is caused by old age, cull the old cow in time and choose young, vigorous cows.
5. Disease-related infertility in cows. During pregnancy and lactation, a cow's bodily functions decline and it becomes relatively weak, making it prone to illness. Miscarriage or stillbirth may cause diseases of the uterus, fallopian tubes, ovaries and so on. All of these can affect the dairy cow's subsequent pregnancy.
Solution: For cows in pregnancy and lactation, do a good job of disease prevention and control, and pay attention to postpartum care as well. Prevent miscarriage and stillbirth in cows.
If a cow becomes infertile, it is best to identify the situation promptly and then treat it accordingly. If the cow has a health problem, promptly consult a veterinarian to learn more about the situation.
