How to Grow an Orchid Cactus (Epiphyllum hybrid)? Detailed Guide to Care Methods and Precautions
1. Soil
The orchid cactus does not have particularly high requirements for soil; a loose, fertile, well-draining sandy loam is sufficient. As long as you pay attention during care and the soil does not become compacted, ordinary soil can be used.
2. Watering
During the growth and development period, water the orchid cactus by the "see dry, see wet" principle, and be careful not to let water accumulate in the pot, otherwise it can easily cause root rot. When flower buds have already appeared but have not yet opened, watering should not be increased either, otherwise it will cause flowers and buds to drop.
In the dry and windy spring and summer, frequently spray the stems and leaves with clean water, and sprinkle water on the surrounding ground to maintain relatively high air humidity; this is more conducive to growth and flowering.
3. Sunlight
The orchid cactus prefers a warm and humid environment, but cannot tolerate direct sunlight. When the weather is relatively hot in summer and the sunlight is relatively strong, place the plant under a shade shed to avoid direct sunlight, and frequently sprinkle or spray water on the surrounding ground to increase air humidity. Winter weather is cold. The orchid cactus is not cold-tolerant, so after bringing it indoors, place it in a spot with ample sunlight.
4. Temperature
The orchid cactus is not cold-tolerant. In northern regions, it should be brought indoors around the Cold Dew solar term, and after being brought indoors, placed in a spot with ample sunlight. From November to March, keep the care temperature for the orchid cactus between 10-15°C; the temperature must not be too high, as above 25°C it can easily cause the plant to grow excessively, affecting the symmetry of the plant shape. From March to June, the temperature should be kept between 13-18°C; if the temperature is too low, it will affect bud formation.
5. Pruning
Because the modified stems of the orchid cactus are soft, thin bamboo poles are needed as supports; it is best to tie them into an oval trellis, and distribute the modified stems neatly and evenly on the trellis and tie them in place. This can both prevent breakage and facilitate ventilation and light penetration, making the plant shape symmetrical and beautiful.
6. Fertilizing
The orchid cactus likes fertilizer. During the growing season, apply 1 application of fully decomposed, dilute cake fertilizer water every 15-20 days. After the Spring Festival, change to applying liquid fertilizer once every 10 days, and promptly remove excess side buds and branch buds sprouting from the base to reduce nutrient consumption and keep the plant shape neat and beautiful. During the bud stage, apply 1-2 additional applications of quick-acting phosphorus fertilizer to promote larger flowers and more vivid colors.
