Koi Breeding Methods and Daily Management Tips
First is the selection of koi fry, which should be purchased at a reputable fish market. After selecting the fry well, choose a suitable fish tank. Then use tap water that has had chlorine removed to raise them. When feeding, pay attention to the nutritional content of the feed, and mix multiple types of feed together. In the later stage, timely disease prevention is needed.
1. Selection of Koi
First, we should choose high-quality koi fry so that their health rate is higher. When buying koi, we should first confirm the health level of the koi, whether they carry any diseases, whether their appearance is well-proportioned, whether there are any other abnormalities, and so on. Because koi are, after all, an ornamental fish species, their appearance is still relatively important. You should choose koi with pure coloration to purchase, and purchases should be made at a reputable fish market; do not seek cheap bargains.
2. Selection of the Koi Fish Tank
When choosing a fish tank, we first need to consider the safety of the koi. Because they are in water, we need to consider the tank's own pressure resistance, so that it can withstand the pressure under a certain volume of water. Another point is the height of the fish tank. We have all probably heard the of the carp leaping over the Dragon Gate, so to prevent the koi from jumping out of the tank and dying, we should choose as tall and large a fish tank as possible. In addition, we should also consider the tank's water filtration system; this is a must.
3. Water Quality
Because some breeders keep koi outdoors, in an open-air state, basically half of the water source comes from rainwater and groundwater. I advise everyone it is best not to use rainwater for raising fish. Rainwater contains some chemical substances that will affect the koi's respiratory system and are not conducive to their development. So it is best to use tap water that has had chlorine removed. Chlorine can be removed by letting the water sit and aerate in the sun, or sodium thiosulfate can be used for chemical dechlorination.
4. Feed
For raising koi, the choice of feed still requires care. Feed options include green vegetables, bean sprouts, bread crumbs, fish meal, and so on. Choose the corresponding fish food according to the different stages of the koi. Nutrition should be reasonably balanced. If conditions permit, it is best to mix multiple types of feed together, so that the nutritional composition is more complete and better supports the koi's growth and development and their need for nutrients. You can also make koi feed yourself; dried carrot, nori, and dried small shrimp are all usable ingredients.
5. Disease Prevention and Control
Koi also suffer from diseases. If we want to prevent them, we must do prevention work in normal times. First is at the very least disinfecting, sterilizing, and cleaning the fish tank, then disinfecting and cleaning the food the koi eat every day, changing the water in the tank regularly, inspecting the water quality in the tank from time to time for leftover feed and cleaning it up promptly, and ensuring the water is clear and clean. During the high-incidence season for koi diseases, be sure to do preventive medication and buy some medicines targeting koi diseases to spray.
