Extensive pond-marsh culture adopts artificial (or semi-artificial) breeding of fry and seed stock, using shallow ponds and low-lying land unsuitable for raising fish and shrimp for large-scale stocking, and the work of pond clearing and water intake must be carried out strictly; enhancement-type tidal flat stocking involves artificially stocking, within a certain range of natural sea area (intertidal zone), juvenile marine polychaetes about to burrow into the sand, thereby enhancing the marine polychaete population.

Marine Polychaete Culture Techniques

1. Extensive pond-marsh culture adopts artificial (or semi-artificial) breeding of fry and seed stock, with large-scale stocking in earthen ponds, and the key is to use shallow ponds and low-lying land unsuitable for raising fish and shrimp. Since these water areas are relatively large and mostly newly developed, with poor pest elimination, and the marine polychaete itself is a feed organism (including adults and juveniles), the work of pond clearing and water intake must be even stricter than for stocking fish and shrimp, to prevent damage from various organisms and avoid affecting survival rate and yield. As long as the density is suitable and management is proper, the yield per mu can exceed 50 kg.

2. Enhancement-type tidal flat stocking is carried out from the perspective of enhancing resources. According to reports, Shandong and Liaoning have artificially stocked, within a certain range of natural sea area (intertidal zone), juvenile marine polychaetes about to burrow into the sand, enhancing the marine polychaete population, achieving the encouraging result of increasing yield by 50-75 times. The method is also very simple, and the social and ecological benefits are very significant.

3. During seedling rearing, no sand is laid, but for stocking seedlings for grow-out, coarse sand must be laid to about 30 cm. Water is irrigated daily, feed is given 2-3 times, together with aeration. In this way, as long as water is supplied promptly, the temperature is suitable, the density is reasonable, and the feed is appropriate, it takes only half a year to raise them to market size, with a yield generally of 10 kg per ping (about 3 kg per sq m).
