How Big Can Flowerhorn Cichlids Grow? A Detailed Look at the Adult Size of Flowerhorn Cichlids
Flowerhorn cichlids generally grow to around 30-40 cm, and the aquarium they are kept in must be at least 100cm×50cm×50cm. Usually it takes 1-2 years for a flowerhorn cichlid to grow to 30 cm, and 2-3 years for a Golden Flower flowerhorn cichlid to reach 40 cm.
Flowerhorn cichlids were developed by crossbreeding, improving and stabilizing the genes of various American cichlids, making them a hybrid of multiple bloodlines. In the industry, flowerhorn cichlid varieties are divided into various strains and types, mainly based on some relatively stable characteristics of the flowerhorn cichlid.
The Texas flowerhorn cichlid strain generally has a body length of 20—30cm, with a relatively flat body shape, a broad body width, an oval form, a relatively low head, a higher back, and small blue-green dots and markings. At sexual maturity, the blue-green spots on the sides of the body turn into pearly markings that shine and are very dazzling.
The flowerhorn cichlid is a large and ferocious fish, and any tankmate must be a fish of considerable size. Among the better matches are arowanas, kissing gouramis, stingrays, Thai tiger fish and king parrots; these fish can basically hold their own alongside flowerhorn cichlids in the tank. When choosing tankmates for flowerhorn cichlids, try to choose non-cichlid fish, omnivorous large fish whose water quality and temperature requirements basically match, in order to reduce unnecessary losses. Moreover, they have the habit of digging up sand and turning over the soil, which will leave even gentle-natured fish lacking any hiding space.
