Caucasian Shepherd vs Tibetan Mastiff comparison: which one is more formidable?
The Caucasian Shepherd and the Tibetan Mastiff are both large dog breeds. When ordinary people keep pet dogs, they seldom choose them, because they are rather fierce and look a bit intimidating. So which one is more formidable, the Caucasian Shepherd or the Tibetan Mastiff? What characteristics do the two kinds of dogs have?
1. Which one is more formidable, the Caucasian Shepherd or the Tibetan Mastiff?
Compared with the Caucasian Shepherd, the Tibetan Mastiff is fiercer and very likely to attack people. Some time ago, the news even reported quite a few incidents of Tibetan Mastiffs attacking people and other animals, so ordinary pet lovers had better choose the Caucasian Shepherd to keep. The Tibetan Mastiff is a rather fierce breed from the highlands; it helps Tibetan people guard their homes and protect their courtyards, and the foes it faces are all quite dangerous wild beasts, so its fierceness and aggressiveness far exceed those of ordinary wild beasts. The Caucasian Shepherd is also a breed that guards homes and courtyards. It likes to lie prone, looking as if it is dozing in place, but as soon as there is the slightest disturbance, it immediately becomes alert, and its movements are surprisingly quick. However, the enemies it faces are relatively simple, mostly unfamiliar people, so its fierceness is far lower than that of the Tibetan Mastiff.
As for loyalty, both breeds are highly loyal to their owners, and the Tibetan Mastiff is said to acknowledge only one owner in its whole life.
2. Characteristics of the Caucasian Shepherd and the Tibetan Mastiff
(1) Body size
1. Body size of the Caucasian Shepherd
The Caucasian Shepherd is a strong and powerful athletic dog; it has powerful muscles and well-developed, well-proportioned bones. Its body length is slightly greater than its shoulder height. It has a huge wedge-shaped skull, tapering from the head to the end of the muzzle, with the end blunt. It has high-set ears, and sometimes the ears are cropped. Its eyes are deep-set and almond-shaped. The black nose is prominent, and the nostrils are very open. Its coat is especially thick and dense. The strong front legs are straight and long, and there is hair between the toes of the large feet, which serves to isolate and protect the toes. The strong paws allow it to stand firmly on uneven ground. The croup is slightly higher than the back, and the thick tail points to the hock; when excited or in motion, it curls up in a sickle shape or curls into a circle.
Height range of the Caucasian Shepherd: 64-90 cm. Weight range: 45-100 kg. For the minimum shoulder height of an adult dog, males exceed 25 1/2 inches and females exceed 24 1/2. Males exceeding 27 1/4 or females exceeding 25 1/2 are both acceptable. The weight must be proportional to the height, which gives the dog a balanced and magnificent appearance.
2. Body size of the Tibetan Mastiff
A large dog breed, with a sturdy and well-proportioned body structure, developed and powerful muscles, moderate balance between head and tail, agile and vigorous movements, calm confidence, extremely fast speed, and lasting endurance. The shoulders are set level, and the bones and muscles are well developed. The front legs are straight and sturdy, tilting slightly inward when standing. Sturdy, with a straight, broad back, well-developed muscles, and the whole body slightly crouched. The chest droops and is lower than the upper elbow. The length of the torso is slightly greater than the height. The minimum height for a male Tibetan Mastiff is 65 cm, and the minimum height for a female is 55 cm. The normal weight of an adult male Tibetan Mastiff is about 50-60 kg, and that of a female is about 40-50 kg. The body length must be greater than the shoulder height.
(2) Shortcomings
1. Shortcomings of the Caucasian Shepherd
Light or loose build, insufficient bone mass, square shape or an overly long torso, markedly downward-curving sternum, male dogs less than 65 cm tall, female dogs less than 62 cm, head too small, too light or out of proportion compared with the body. Protruding forehead, defective occiput, long muzzle, narrow muzzle, pointed muzzle, head and face too delicate or swollen, weak lower jaw, overly steep forehead-to-nose transition, too many wrinkles on the head, loose lips, drooping eyelids, eyes too large, goldfish eyes, iris too light in color or blue and yellow-green irises, teeth small, sparse, severely damaged, high-set neck, insufficiently developed chest, flat chest, narrow chest, thin chest, short chest, narrow back, concave back, humped back, narrow loin, long loin, arched loin, sagging loin. Weak joints, overly narrow stance of the limbs, narrow feet, flat feet, swollen feet, flowing fast gait, overly unrestrained movement not typical of this breed, sticky and clumsy movement, hindquarters too high when running, unbalanced movement, abnormal “crabbing”.
2. Shortcomings of the Tibetan Mastiff
The Tibetan Mastiff is fierce by nature, but loyal and protective of its owner, strongly territorial, large and imposing, expensive, and understanding. Of course, most Tibetan Mastiffs nowadays are not purebred, and these dogs are all a bit neurotic. Also, when a Tibetan Mastiff is in heat, due to the effect of male hormones, its temper becomes rather irritable.
Shortcomings of the lion-shaped Tibetan Mastiff: as can be seen from the fact that more than 80% of the existing Tibetan Mastiff population is lion-shaped, the heads of lion-shaped Tibetan Mastiffs are all smaller than those of tiger-headed Mastiffs, the muzzle is pointed, long and thin, the size is generally on the small side, the bark is mostly shrill and thin, the cranial nerves are relatively sensitive and easily excited, and they are prone to barking wildly. After a dog sheds its hair in summer, it can cause too great a difference in appearance, and the shed hair can also cause troubles in environmental hygiene.
Shortcomings of the tiger-shaped Mastiff: because the hair standing on top of the dog's head is not long and the mane is short, the dog's head looks less majestic and good-looking than that of the lion-shaped Mastiff. A small number of dogs, because their temperament is too steady and clever, show hesitation in the timing of an attack or are not very good at taking the initiative to attack.
