What are the characteristics of the giant panda's living habits?
Giant pandas like to live alone, and each giant panda has its own separate activity area. Except during the mating season, they usually live a solitary life, active day and night. The home range area varies from 3.9-6.4 km², and home ranges overlap between individuals. The home range of males is slightly larger than that of females. Females spend most of their time active only within a core area of 30-40 hectares, and the core areas of females do not overlap.
Panda Habits
1. Hermit of the Bamboo Forest
Giant pandas are solitary by nature and often live scattered and alone in dense bamboo groves, earning them the elegant title of “Hermit of the Bamboo Forest.” Only in the warm spring season, for love, do they each break through their barriers, chase one another, and fall passionately in love and pair up.
2. Skilled at Climbing Trees
Pandas are good at climbing trees in order to escape enemies, bask in the sun, play, and seek mates. Despite their plump bodies, giant pandas are expert tree climbers; this is an instinct inherited from their carnivorous ancestors, useful for hunting prey and avoiding enemies. Young giant pandas mostly climb trees for play.
3. Fond of Drinking Water
Pandas often live near clear springs and flowing water, and have a habit of drinking frequently. Sometimes they will even travel long distances to drink from faraway valleys. Once they find a water source, they lie by the stream like a drunken man, drinking desperately until they are so “drunk” they cannot move. Hence the saying “panda drunk on water.”
