Is salmon and salmon the same fish? A detailed explanation of the differences between the two
Salmon and salmon are not the same fish. Salmon and chum salmon both belong to the Salmonidae family, but salmon belongs to the genus Oncorhynchus, while chum salmon belongs to the genus Oncorhynchus. In a broad sense, chum salmon is actually salmon, both are salmon, but in reality they still have great differences.
1. Salmon
The salmon has a laterally compressed body, a raised back, sharp teeth, small scales, and a silver-gray color. During the spawning season it has orange stripes. Its flesh is firm and delicious, pink in color with elasticity, and it has small scales and few bones. Salmon are anadromous migratory fish belonging to the genera Salmo and Oncorhynchus.
2. Chum salmon
Chum salmon generally have a body length of about 60 cm and are laterally compressed, roughly spindle-shaped. From behind the head to the front of the dorsal fin base they gradually rise, and the starting point of the dorsal fin is the highest point of the body, from which it gradually slopes down and bends toward the tail. The head is laterally compressed, the tip of the snout protrudes and curves slightly, the mouth opening is large and shaped like a bird's beak, and both the upper and lower jaws each have a row of sharp teeth. The eyes are small, and the scales are also small and arranged in a imbricate pattern. The adipose fin is small and located very far back, and the caudal fin is deeply forked. Chum salmon are cold-water anadromous migratory fish belonging to the genus Oncorhynchus (the chum salmon genus).
