What are the methods for catching yellow weasels and what are their natural enemies?
For people who raise chickens in rural areas, the thing they fear most is a yellow weasel suddenly coming to “pay a New Year call.” As everyone knows, the yellow weasel is very cunning and moves quickly, able to climb trees and enter water. So, what are the methods for catching yellow weasels? What natural enemies do they fear?
1. Methods for Catching Yellow Weasels
1. Catching with a Wooden Box Trap
Use wooden boards 0.03-0.09 chi thick to make a box 3 chi long, 0.6 chi wide, and 0.5 chi high. Both ends of the wooden box are movable trap doors. Drill a small hole in the middle of the back of each trap door, and carve a line groove in the exact center of the box lid, then drill a small hole in the middle of the groove as well. Then take a thin rope 3 chi long and tie a small round nail to each end. Hang a thin rope 2-3 cun long from the center of the thin rope, and hang a small hook made of iron wire at the bottom of the rope. Hang the bait on the small hook. When the yellow weasel comes into the box to steal food, it touches the small round nails on both trap doors, the nails come loose from the doors, the doors drop down by themselves, and the yellow weasel is trapped inside the box.
2. Carbide Catching Method
This method is not only simple to operate but also very effective. Just set up an iron wire net outside the hole, throw a piece of carbide into the cave, then pour one or two cups of water into the hole. When carbide meets water, it gives off smoke. The yellow weasel will be startled by the smoke and run out, right into the iron wire net we have set up.
3. Hunting with Dogs
Dogs can sniff out the scent of yellow weasels, and a dog's barking also frightens them. Therefore, keeping a dog at home can also scare yellow weasels away.
4. Bamboo Tube Trap
Choose a bamboo tube about 0.9 chi thick and cut it into lengths of 2—3 chi. Bury it in the soil with the opening level with the ground. The inside of the bamboo tube must be kept smooth. Put bait into the bottom of the tube. The yellow weasel crawls in to eat and cannot back out, so it is caught.
5. Driving Them Away with Light
They are afraid of places with light. Therefore, we can install some lights in the yard and turn them on at night. This can drive yellow weasels away and prevent them from damaging crops.
6. Inverted-Barb Cage Catching Method
Sharpen elastic steel strips and weave them into an inverted-barb cage that only allows entry and no exit. It must be made of iron material, not bamboo. After the cage is made, put a live toad inside to lure them in to steal food.
7. Catching with Tools
We can buy some mousetraps or glue boards on the market. They like to be active at night. Therefore, we only need to put the traps or glue boards in the yard when it gets dark, and the next day we can see that some yellow weasels that failed to escape have been caught.
2. What natural enemies are yellow weasels afraid of?
As the saying goes, “one thing subdues another.” You would never guess that the natural enemies of yellow weasels are actually geese, eagles, and dogs, and what they fear most is geese and goose droppings.
Although yellow weasels steal chickens, they are also experts at eliminating mice. Therefore, for any animal, catching should be carried out reasonably on the premise of maintaining the natural ecological balance.
