The beauty of fireflies is something people long for, especially when swaths of yellow-green light gather together, looking very romantic. There are also quite a few species of fireflies, and whether larvae, pupae or eggs, they can all emit light. However, different species of fireflies glow for different lengths of time; some can glow for several minutes, while others can only glow for a few seconds. So what season do fireflies usually appear in? What are their living habits like?

1. What season do fireflies usually appear in?

Judging from childhood memories, fireflies usually appear on hot summer evenings, especially around farmland, streams, small rivers, ponds and similar places. They can be seen especially where there is clean water. However, the activity times of fireflies differ somewhat at different stages; among adults, for example, some are active at night and some are active during the day. But most are active in the evening, that is, around eight to nine o'clock.

So why is it becoming harder and harder to see fireflies now?

As urbanisation advances, land and other resources are developed, which has had a certain impact on many living things in nature. The number of fireflies has also kept declining along with human exploitation. First, their habitats are constantly being destroyed, leading to changes in their living environment, leaving them with nowhere to live and depend on. Second, humans continuously use chemicals and pesticides, causing pollution of soil, water and so on. Finally, household waste is also one of the key factors in the decline of fireflies.

2. What are the living habits of fireflies like?

Fireflies are mainly distributed in temperate, tropical and subtropical regions. More than fifty varieties have been found in our country, mainly concentrated in the southeastern coastal provinces.

Fireflies mainly rely on two ways of living, aquatic and terrestrial, with terrestrial ones making up the majority. They often hide in places with dense vegetation, relatively high height and relatively high humidity. If aquatic, their demands on the environment are higher: the water quality must be clean and cannot have the slightest pollution.

The transformation of a firefly from larva to pupa requires going through six stages in total. Young fireflies like to eat crustaceans and snails; they first inject liquid with a needle to anaesthetise them, and then break down the flesh.

In early spring, fireflies begin to crawl onto the bank and then burrow into the soil. At this time they change their breathing method, and light is emitted from both sides of their abdomen. In less than about two months, they can transform from pupa to adult. However, the average lifespan is not long, basically only five days of work. Generally, fireflies are relatively active at sunset, using light emission to send signals to each other.

Have you now got a clear picture of the question of what season fireflies usually appear in and what their living habits are like? We hope it is of some help to you.
