When raising or buying quail, you need to tell whether a quail is male or female, and many people may not know how to distinguish them. Let's take a look below at some tips on how to tell male and female quail apart.

1. Newly hatched quail

Within 24 hours of hatching, quail chicks can be sexed by the vent method. Under a 100-watt incandescent lamp, hold the chick with your left hand with its head pointing down and its back pressed tightly against your palm, gripping it gently to keep it still; then use the thumb, index finger and middle finger of your left hand to hold the quail's body, and with the index finger and thumb of your right hand gently open the chick's cloaca up and down; if the mucous membrane of the cloaca is yellowish-red and there is a small genital protrusion in the center of the lower wall, it is male; conversely, if it is light black and there is no genital protrusion, it is female.

2. Adult quail

1. Male quail have a compact body shape and a smaller body weight; female quail have a loose body shape and a larger body weight.

2. The feathers on the breast and cheeks of male quail are reddish-brown, while the feathers on the breast and cheeks of female quail are gray with black spots.

3. The call of male quail is short, crisp and loud, while the call of female quail is fine and faint.

4. Male quail have a red, swollen sex gland above the anus, while female quail have no swollen area above the anus.

5. The droppings of male quail often have white foam-like attachments, while the droppings of female quail have no foam-like attachments.

There are quite a few ways to tell male and female quail apart, and they are fairly simple; you can tell them apart directly from their appearance.
