For snakehead fish, small fish, small shrimp, earthworms, loach, frogs and other baits work well. In everyday use, the most effective are loach, small frogs, black earthworms, and so on. If using a frog as bait, it is best to pierce the hook in from the anus and bring it out through the tip of the upper jaw. If using loach as bait, it is best to pass the hook crosswise through the back of the loach.

How to catch snakehead fish?

1. Bamboo pole fishing method: Prepare a bamboo pole five to seven meters long, then take out nylon line with a diameter of 0.4-0.5 cm, tie one end of the nylon line to the tip of the pole, and attach a relatively large fish hook to the other end. The length of the nylon line should be equal to or slightly shorter than the bamboo pole, with no need for a lead sinker or float. Every year from May to September is the breeding period for snakehead fish, and also the best season for fishing.

① Fishing the green nest: In May and June, snakehead fish will find a place with a lot of weeds and make a bright water hole about the size of a washbasin, which people call a green nest. After casting the bait into the green nest, shake the fishing rod back and forth a few times. The male snakehead that spots the bait will rush up, first hold the bait in its mouth, then dive underwater. At this point, do not lift the rod; wait until bubbles come up or the line runs, then lift the rod. Once the male is caught, the female will not run too far and will swim back after a short wait. Repeat the previous action, and you can catch the female fish as well.

② Fishing the yellow nest: In early summer, after snakehead fish spawn, because the eggs are pale yellow, people call it a yellow nest. Compared with other fish, snakehead fish care for their eggs very much: the female guards below the eggs, while the male patrols around. Using the method described above and continuing to fish in the wild will definitely not disappoint you.

③ Fishing the black fry: In August and September, after the eggs have hatched successfully, the small fish gather in groups on the water surface to feed, forming a mass as large as a football, called black fry. The male fish is in front, the female fish behind, and the small fish are protected in the middle by the large fish. The method for fishing black fry is still the same as above, but in order to harvest more and catch more fish, people generally fish the yellow nest and black fry.

2. Hand-line fishing method: The hand-line fishing method does not use a fishing rod; just prepare a nylon line with a diameter of 0.4-0.5 mm as the fishing line, with a length between 15-20 m. Wrap one end of the fishing line around a piece of wood or bamboo, and tie a slightly larger fish hook and lead sinker to the other end. Still no float is needed, and use small live fish or live loach as bait. The fishing spot is best about one meter from the bank in a position without water grass. After lowering the hook, hold the fishing line and the piece of bamboo or wood with your right hand, and either watch the line run or pull the line by feel.

3. Self-swallowing fishing method: The self-swallowing fishing method is a fishing method in which the angler, when fishing in the wild, first sets the fishing gear aside and then fishes for other fish species himself; when a snakehead takes the hook, he retrieves the line to get the fish. There are two kinds of gear for catching snakehead fish. One is to cut both sides of a rectangular wooden board or bamboo block into a V shape, wrap a five-meter-long thick nylon line in the V shape, drill a small hole on one side of the board, pass one end of the fishing line through the small hole and tie a knot, and tie a fish hook on the other side, baited with a live fish. The second is to use a section of bamboo pole, make a groove on both sides, then wind the line in, and sharpen one side so it can later be inserted into the soil. When starting to fish, cast the bait three meters away from the bank, press the line board down with a stone, and insert the bamboo pole into the soil. Each time, you can set out four or five line boards and bamboo poles.

The above is the relevant introduction on what bait is good for catching snakehead fish. We hope it is helpful to everyone.
