What protection level does the muntjac have in China? A detailed explanation of its protection status
The muntjac is a national second-class protected animal in China. Within China, three species are mainly distributed: the black muntjac, the red muntjac and the small muntjac. The black muntjac has the smallest population and a narrow distribution range, and has been listed as an internationally endangered animal.
Introduction to muntjacs
1. Red muntjac
The red muntjac is the largest of the muntjac species, and is fairly numerous in Guangdong, Guangxi, Yunnan, Guizhou and Sichuan in China. It generally lives in forests or thick grass. Sometimes it also enters the houses or farmland of nearby residents, so be sure not to hunt or kill it. It is basically solitary, fairly alert, and mostly eats tender grass.
2. Black muntjac
The black muntjac is a species unique to China and is a nationally protected animal of China. It is not as large as the red muntjac, and usually feeds mainly on tender grass, leaves, fruits and vegetables. Because of its declining numbers, it is not commonly seen, and appears in places such as Zhejiang and Anhui in China.
3. Small muntjac
The small muntjac is the smallest variety and is also a species unique to our country. Its call is rather distinctive, and it lives in low-lying hills, the valleys of small hills, and hillside scrub. It mostly eats green grass, fruits, seeds and so on.
