Dinosaurs are of two types: herbivorous and carnivorous. Generally, some short herbivorous dinosaurs would stand on their hind legs to eat leaves high up, while carnivorous dinosaurs fed on herbivorous dinosaurs and other animals. In addition, tyrannosaurid dinosaurs often acted alone, while large herbivorous ones often moved in groups to defend against outside enemies. Below, a few fairly well-known dinosaurs are introduced for you.

What kinds of dinosaurs are there?

1. Tyrannosaurus rex (the last non-avian dinosaur to survive)

Tyrannosaurus rex, i.e. the king tyrant lizard, lived at the end of the Cretaceous period and was one of the last non-avian dinosaur species before the Cretaceous-Paleogene extinction event. Its fossils are distributed in the United States and Canada in North America, and it is one of the dinosaurs that went extinct latest. Tyrannosaurus rex is the largest species in the family Tyrannosauridae, with a body length of about 11.5-14.7 m.

2. Amphicoelias fragillimus (the largest known dinosaur)

Amphicoelias fragillimus was the longest and heaviest dinosaur in history, and even its maximum weight was greater than that of the blue whale. It was 35 m long and is closely related to Diplodocus.

3. Ankylosaurus (the armored dinosaur)

Ankylosaurus could reach a body length of 10 m, with a wide body and a short neck; its limbs were thick, short and strong; its feet were short and wide, with 5 fingers on the front feet and 4 toes on the hind feet, and the ends of the fingers (toes) had hoof-like claws, suitable for activity on land. Ankylosaurus is often regarded as the earliest armored dinosaur. Its characteristics are a body covered in armor and a huge club-like tail.

4. Liopleurodon (a carnivorous marine dinosaur)

Liopleurodon means “smooth-sided teeth”; it was a carnivorous marine reptile belonging to the short-necked Pliosauroidea within the order Plesiosauria.

5. Stegosaurus (the spiky dinosaur)

Stegosaurus was a huge herbivorous dinosaur, a herbivorous animal that lived in the late Jurassic period. On its back was a row of huge bony plates, and it had a dangerous tail with four sharp spikes to defend against attacks by predators. It was about 7-9 m long, 2.35 m to 3.5 m tall, and weighed 2 to 4 tons. Because of its peculiar tail spikes and bony plates, Stegosaurus is one of the most easily recognized dinosaurs, and it was a herbivore.

As for the causes and theories of dinosaur extinction, the debate in the scientific community has always been intense. But whatever the cause, one thing is beyond doubt: dinosaurs could not adapt to the changed living environment, thus causing the mass extinction.
