Dinosaurs are not mammals; they are a type of prehistoric reptile. They include both herbivorous and carnivorous kinds, and they were diverse, with great variation in body size and habits. Although dinosaurs are not mammals, the following animals are true mammals, so let us learn about them together.

What kinds of mammals are there?

1. The largest mammal——the blue whale

The blue whale is considered the largest animal known to have ever lived on Earth, reaching up to 33 m in length and weighing up to 181 tons. It often inhabits the meeting zones of warm and cold seawater, and usually feeds on plankton and krill.

2. China's national treasure——the panda

The giant panda is a species endemic to China, and its main remaining habitat is the mountainous regions of Sichuan, Shaanxi and Gansu in China. It relies almost entirely on bamboo for food; among the more than 50 kinds of plants it naturally eats in the wild, bamboos account for more than half, and they make up 99% of its yearly food intake. Among them, its favorites include 7 kinds such as Farges' giant bamboo and the arrow bamboo of western China.

3. Sharing similar traits with humans——the dolphin

Dolphins are aquatic mammals closely related to whales and porpoises. They evolved about 10 million years ago during the Miocene and live widely in shallow seas near continental shelves, occasionally appearing in freshwater. They mainly feed on fish and mollusks. They chiefly inhabit warm tropical seas, but some, such as the right whale dolphin, prefer colder waters. They usually live in shallow water or at least stay near the sea surface.

Mammals are named for their ability to secrete milk through mammary glands to nurse their young, while the long-extinct dinosaurs did not, so dinosaurs are not mammals.
