What Kind of Animal Are Dinosaurs? A Guide to Dinosaur Classification
Dinosaurs are a group of reptiles that appeared during the Mesozoic Era. They were highly diverse, varying greatly in body size and habits. In terms of diet, there were gentle herbivores, fierce carnivores, and omnivorous dinosaurs that ate both meat and plants. As reptiles, they differ from other reptiles in the following ways.
What Are the Differences Between Dinosaurs and Other Reptiles?
1. Difference in stance
Dinosaurs had a fully upright stance, with their limbs positioned directly beneath their bodies. This structure was more advantageous for walking and running than that of other reptiles (such as crocodiles, whose limbs splay outward). Based on differences in the structure of the dinosaur pelvis, they can be divided into two major groups: Saurischia (lizard-hipped) and Ornithischia (bird-hipped).
2. Difference in locomotion
Other reptiles move by crawling, but dinosaurs are divided into quadrupedal herbivorous sauropods and bipedal carnivorous theropods.
3. Difference in limb growth
The limbs of reptiles grow sideways from the torso, so they can only crawl; whereas the limbs of dinosaurs, like those of mammals and birds, grow downward (toward the belly).
Although dinosaurs have disappeared from the Earth, research on them has never stopped, and dinosaur fossils are found in many countries. Friends who are interested in dinosaurs can visit various museums to learn more.
