What are the costs and risks of bamboo rat farming?
Bamboo rats feed on bamboo, silvergrass, plant stems and stalks, and other materials. It gets its name because it eats bamboo. This species mainly inhabits the tropical and subtropical forests, scrublands and bamboo forests of eastern Africa and southern Asia. Today let us discuss the costs and risks of bamboo rat farming.
First-year cost calculation method
1. Cage construction cost. Each rat cage costs 12 yuan (including labor); based on 100 rat cages, the construction cost is about 1200 yuan.
2. Breeding stock cost. Breeding stock is the largest cost in the initial investment stage of bamboo rat farming. Due to regional differences, the market unit price is generally in the range of 260—460. Calculating at the middle price of 360 yuan per pair, the breeding stock cost of 50 pairs of bamboo rats is 18,000 yuan.
3. Annual feed cost. Feed costs consist of concentrate and roughage. The average annual use of the concentrate portion is about 0.16 yuan/day per rat, totaling 5840 yuan per year for 100 rats. The feeding cost of the roughage portion is about 0.1 yuan/day, totaling 3650 yuan per year for 100 rats. Concentrate + roughage = 9490 yuan
4. Loss value. Due to various reasons such as death or culling, calculated at an average loss of 20%. There are still 40 pairs of breeding bamboo rats left.
5. First-year reproduction status. Based on purchasing seedlings of about one jin, the rearing cycle is about 7 months before breeding begins. The gestation period of bamboo rats is 45 days, and the nursing period is 40 days. Calculating 10 days of rest. In the first year, they can basically reproduce one litter. With 40 female rats and a reproduction rate of 90%, there are only 36 rats that can reproduce. If each gives birth to 3, a total of 108 pups is obtained. However, for beginners facing the first litter, due to insufficient feeding experience, losses from eating pups, abandoning pups, and lack of milk often reach 50% or even higher, leaving 54 weaned pups. Offsetting this against the earlier losses, about 134 large and small rats remain at the end of the year.
6. Miscellaneous expenses. Including water, electricity, medicine, and transportation, about 2000 yuan.
In summary, the first-year investment cost for 50 pairs under part-time farming is about 30690 yuan.
Profit and risk coexist
Farming is an industry where profit and risk coexist, so new learners of bamboo rat farming should reasonably analyze whether they are suited to farming bamboo rats based on local conditions and their own circumstances, and must not farm blindly. Choosing healthy and excellent offspring of bamboo rats is the key to successful farming. Excellent bamboo rat breeding stock is certainly not cheap, but expensive does not necessarily mean good, so one needs to keep eyes wide open when choosing. Bamboo rat farming techniques are summarized step by step through ordinary practical experience. Only by combining theoretical knowledge with farming practice can things go smoothly, so the scale of bamboo rat farming in the early stage should be moderate. For this kind of new special farming, oversupply certainly will not work; before farming, one should understand market demand clearly and make a good farming cost budget.
