Recommended Beekeeping Technique Books to Master Scientific Beekeeping Methods
Beekeeping technique books mainly introduce beekeeping techniques to guide beekeepers in getting started quickly. They generally include content such as selection of beekeeping sites, placement of bee colonies, colony management and colony overwintering management. Such related books can be purchased at major bookstores and online shopping platforms.
1. Beekeeping site: The apiary site should be chosen on a quiet hillside, half-hillside or at the edge of woods far from factories, mines and highways, avoiding disturbance from people, livestock or vibration, and there should be an ample and clean water source near the apiary. It is best to have a wide variety of nectar and pollen plant species, with a continuous nectar flow period and no overly long nectar dearth period, which makes management more convenient.
2. Colony placement: Placement should be based on the characteristics of the bee colonies. Western honey bee colonies should be placed in rows, neat and close together, facing the same direction. For Chinese honey bee colonies, the distance between colonies should be greater, with front and back staggered, and the entrance direction need not be uniform, to prevent bees from drifting between colonies and fighting and killing each other.
3. Colony management: Preventing robbing is a main task in bee management and should be constantly monitored. It is best to drill 6—8 small holes in two rows in the entrance gate board, with a hole diameter of 5—5.5mm. During the rearing process, open or plug the holes according to changes in colony strength. Seal the box seams tightly with plastic tape.
4. Overwintering management: In the central part, place 2—3 half-honey combs with honey in the upper part and empty cells in the lower part, or combs with less than half honey, and on the outside place one large honey comb with a small number of empty cells in the lower part. This is because, in order to keep the cluster tight, bees often gnaw away large sections of the lower part of the comb. If these are all honey cells, the bees will consume large amounts of honey during the gnawing process; eating too much honey leads to excessive accumulation of feces, and dysentery in the later overwintering period will cause serious losses.
The above is a brief introduction to some simple beekeeping techniques. If you want a detailed and specific understanding of beekeeping technique books, you may go to a bookstore or an online shopping platform to choose and purchase them, where you will find more detailed answers.
