What kind of fishing rod is best for snakehead fishing? Choose your rod this way to catch more fish
The snakehead is a kind of fish we often come across; it is highly nutritious, fierce by nature, highly prolific and has a huge appetite, and it can often eat all the other fish in a lake or pond. So, what kind of fishing rod is used for snakehead fishing? What should be kept in mind?
1. What kind of fishing rod is used for snakehead fishing?
For snakehead fishing you can use a long rod, a stiff rod, a sea rod, and so on. A rod length of 7-8 m is recommended, and it must be sturdy and reliable. This is because the snakehead moves fast and charges hard, and an ordinary fishing rod cannot withstand its force. By the same token, when choosing the fishing line, consider one that can withstand a pull of more than 10 kg; generally you can twist several strands of nylon thread into a 3-5 m length, and for snakehead fishing you do not need a float.
2. Things to keep in mind when fishing for snakehead
1. Time
March to May: In the south, the time when you can fish wild for snakehead starts around April, while in the north you have to wait until May; by then the snakehead has already begun coming to the water surface to bask in the sun. The snakehead's feeding time should be after March, and you can also fish wild at this time.
June to August: From June to August the snakehead begins to mate and spawn; at this time the female snakehead does not feed quite so aggressively, but after the snakehead finishes spawning, this period is in fact the best time for wild snakehead fishing.
September to November: September to October is the peak feeding period for snakehead, because during the spawning period the snakehead guards the fry and does not feed so fiercely, and since winter is approaching it needs a great deal of strength and energy, so there will be a feeding peak.
2. Fishing spots
Spring: In spring the water temperature in the shallow-water belt near the shore that is sheltered from the wind and faces the sun rises relatively quickly, and places overgrown with aquatic grass often attract large numbers of small fish and shrimps to gather and feed, while small fish and shrimps are the snakehead's delicacy; therefore when fishing in spring, choose the aquatic grass in the shallow-water belt.
Summer: The high water temperature in summer makes the snakehead quickly transition from the growth period to the breeding period; at this time you should choose a spot near the shore that is sheltered from the wind, and especially good is the open water surface near the sun-facing shallow-water aquatic grass, because this is where the snakehead spawns and nests.
Autumn: In early autumn the daytime is still very hot, while in the morning and evening it is relatively cool; if you go fishing during the hotter daytime hours, the fishing spot should be chosen among the stone piles at the edge of the pond or in shady places such as grass, because the snakehead often escapes the heat and cools off there.
When we fish for snakehead, we need to choose a suitable fishing rod according to changes in the environment; only in this way can we catch more.
