What is the difference between sole fish and cod? A quick guide to telling the two fish apart
Sole fish and cod are both types of sea fish, and both have important food and economic value, but do you know what the difference between the two is?
Differences between sole fish and cod
1. Price
Cod has many species, such as Pacific cod, Atlantic cod, walleye pollock, etc., and their prices are all relatively high. It is understood that in the Beijing market, even the cheapest cod has a wholesale price of more than 100 yuan per jin, and sablefish is even more expensive. The price of sole fish, however, cannot match that of cod, generally around several tens of yuan per jin.
2. Distribution
Sole fish live and inhabit the coastal waters of China all year round, while those distributed on both sides of the North Pacific and North Atlantic generally inhabit the near-bottom layer, ranging from nearshore to deep-sea areas. The main producing countries of cod are Canada, Iceland, Norway and Russia.
3. Ecological type
Sole fish, commonly known as ox tongue, is a warm-temperate large bottom-dwelling fish in coastal waters, with characteristics of wide temperature tolerance, wide salinity tolerance and adaptability to variable environmental conditions. Its suitable temperature range is 3.5—32℃, the optimum water temperature is 14—24℃, and the suitable salinity range is 14-33‰.
Cod is a cold-water benthic fish. In summer and autumn it inhabits the cold-water area of the Yellow Sea, and in winter it migrates to overwinter in the coastal muddy-bottom area at a water depth of 50-80 m. Most cod live in the cold seas of the northern Pacific and Atlantic at water temperatures of 0℃-16℃.
The above is an introduction to some of the differences between sole fish and cod. I wonder if it has been of any help to you.
