The redeye fish, also known as the red-eye trout, resembles the grass carp in appearance. Because it grows fast, adapts easily, and is very easy to catch, it is deeply loved by anglers. So how do you fish for redeye fish?

1. How to fish for redeye fish?

1. Float fishing for redeye fish

Bottom fishing for red-eye trout is the same as fishing for other omnivorous bottom-dwelling fish: you can first scatter groundbait at the fishing spot. The groundbait for red-eye trout is the same as for crucian carp. Depending on its feeding habits, bait can be shrimp meat, river clam meat, aquatic insects, or dough bait. Of course, different environments also make choosing different fishing methods very important.

2. Casting rod fishing for redeye fish

Although the red-eye trout is a small to medium-sized fish, it swims quickly and has considerable escape force, so a light casting rod is also very suitable for fishing for it. When fishing with a light casting rod, pair it with a small spinning reel, and the fishing line diameter is the same as that used for a float rod. Line length is 80-100 m. For the hook and sinker combination, you can use the sinker-above-hook or sinker-below-hook method. With the sinker-above-hook method, you can form a hook series from 3-5 single hooks; with the sinker-below-hook method, you can connect two single hooks from a spreader or use a connector to join a hook group of 6-8 hooks.

3. Lure fishing for redeye fish

In winter, the red-eye trout is relatively suited to lure fishing. This fish species feeds very aggressively. When fishing in the wild, especially at suitable tide stages, its competition for food is astonishing. At such times, lure fishing is more suitable. Also, because you are fishing in river channels with rising and falling tides, a float rod is not very suitable either. When the traditional bottom-fishing method is also not ideal, you can use lure fishing. For lures, spinners, spinnerbaits, minnows, soft worms, and so on can all be used.

To fish for redeye fish with lures, you must first choose good spots. Red-eye trout generally move along the shore, and it likes terrain where deep and shallow water meet, and the more obstacles in the terrain, the more it likes it. Therefore, spots can be chosen in obstacle-rich areas along the shore, such as banks overgrown with aquatic plants or artificial water conservancy facilities. Red-eye trout can usually be encountered at these spots. Fishing for red-eye trout does not require long casts. The main thing is to keep parallel to the shore where deep and shallow water meet and control the running direction of the lure. This is the biggest key point.

Red-eye trout like lures with a relatively high light reflectance, and choosing slender types can improve palatability. This must be noted. During operation, it is advisable to retrieve the line somewhat quickly. Red-eye trout have a relatively strong interest in fast-moving bait. If red-eye trout prefer bright and fast lures and you are fishing beside trees at the water's edge, then the closer the lure is to under the tree, the better. Food is abundant here, and it is also a place where red-eye trout like to linger. At this time, it is also a test of the angler's rod-handling skill. Operate carefully to prevent the lure from getting tangled in the trees.

2. What bait is good for fishing for redeye fish?

For fishing for redeye fish, fresh livers from poultry and livestock such as chickens, ducks, geese, pigs, and sheep can all be used, and bloodworms can also be used. Among them, chicken and duck liver are the best, as they are easily noticed by the fish and have a very strong fresh, tender appeal.

Bait preparation: 60% wheat bran, 20% pellet feed (or chick feed), 20% red fermented rice, plus tomato and rice. This can prepare a very good bomb hook bait ball for wild mud carp.

Note: The bait should highlight aroma and also have a slight sour taste. After the bait is mixed, put it in a plastic bag, tie it tightly, and place it in the refrigerator's cold storage compartment to let it ferment naturally for a few days, which will produce a slight sour taste.

Overall, redeye fish are still quite easy to catch, but the specifics depend on where you are fishing. For specific methods, you can refer to the methods above.
