Turkey meat is tender and tasty, with a very strong gamey flavor, a high lean meat ratio, and rich protein content, along with low cholesterol and little fat; it has remarkable effects such as boosting human immunity and resisting aging. So, do you know how to tell male from female turkey poults?

1. How to Tell Male from Female Turkey Poults?

Turkey poults can be sexed by the vent-sexing method. Hold the poult with the palm of the left hand pressed closely against it, with the cloaca facing upward, and with the right hand gently pull the poult's tail toward its back, which will expose the cloaca. If two pale red oval spherical protrusions are seen on the lower part of the cloaca, it is a male poult; if no two protrusions are seen on the lower part of the cloaca, but instead there is a pale pink V-shaped fold whose lower edge thickens and extends to both sides, gradually tapering, it is a female poult.

2. What Are the Differences Between Male and Female Adult Turkeys?

The adult male has a bare head with caruncles, generally bright red, but turning white with bright blue when excited. Other obvious features of the common turkey include a long red fleshy ornament from the forehead to the beak; a wattle on the throat; a black, coarser, hair-like tuft of feathers on the chest, called a beard; and spur projections on the legs. The female generally weighs only half as much as the male, and the caruncles and wattles on the head are also smaller.

In the process of raising turkeys, we can find that the method of distinguishing male from female turkey poults is relatively complicated, and generally after feeding them for a period of time it becomes very easy to identify them.
