How to Fish for Yellowtail? Master These Techniques to Catch Fish Easily
Yellowtail is a common fish in everyday life, and many people go fishing by the lotus pond as soon as autumn arrives, so how do you fish for yellowtail?
1. Best time to fish for yellowtail
The best fishing time is from May to October, mainly on clear days.
2. Bait selection
When fishing for yellowtail culter, either fishy or aromatic bait works; just mix in some commercial bait containing algae, and that will do. To attract fish faster, try to choose a pull bait that can be prepared for a fast, high-frequency cadence.
3. Tackle selection
(1) Fishing rod
For yellowtail culter, it is best to choose a short rod with a suitable action (use 28 action as a reference), because yellowtail culter fights hard, and crucian carp or common carp of the same size simply cannot compare with yellowtail. Yellowtail culter mostly moves close to the shore, so we do not need a long rod. For yellowtail culter, a 28 action is more suitable; as for rod length, 2.7 m to 3.6 m is enough.
(2) Fishing line
Yellowtail culter gives weak float signals when it bites, so the fishing line should be thin; it also has strong impact force, so the line strength still needs to be high. In other words, try to use slightly better line, and this point requires us to make the right combination.
A main line of 0.8 to 1.2 and a leader line of 0.3 to 0.8 is a commonly used main-and-leader line combination among anglers (determine the line number according to fish size); everyone can use this as a reference.
(3) Float
Yellowtail culter is a mid-to-lower-layer fish, small in size, with a rather special mouth shape, so when choosing a float, we should choose a small float that turns over quickly, sinks steadily and at a uniform speed, and gives good signals after reaching the bottom.
(4) Fish hook
Because the yellowtail has a special mouth shape, there are actually very few hook types we can choose. A sleeve hook works quite well for yellowtail culter; it not only has an extremely thin wire, but also has the advantages of a sharp point and extremely light weight, making it very effective for yellowtail culter, whose suction force is not very strong.
4. Fishing spot selection
(1) Specifically look for rock piles to fish: yellowtail mainly feeds on algae in the water, and places with rocks in the water often have large amounts of stone moss and the like, which are the favorite food of round-snout culter, so when fishing, as long as you find a spot with rocks and cast your rod, you will surely get a good catch. The larger the rocks in the water, the larger the fish.
(2) Specifically look for flowing water to fish: yellowtail likes to gather and feed at culvert mouths and dam heads where water flows, because the dissolved oxygen here is rich and the large rocks used to build the dam are rich in algae. The downside of fishing in flowing water is that a vertical float in platform fishing is unstable, and you can only position it by holding the wind line.
(3) Specifically look for new fishing spots: yellowtail has a very strong sense of territory, living in the water in groups and forming their own “tribes.” When encountering an invasion by an outside enemy, they will fight with their shovel-shaped round snouts and drive the opponent out of the territory. Therefore, each time you fish, it is best to look for some new fishing spots where no one has fished.
Overall, yellowtail is still quite easy to catch. As long as you choose the fishing spot, fishing gear, bait, and so on well, then cast into a 2 m lake and wait patiently for the fish to bite, that is enough. However, if you are fishing for the first time, you can refer to the detailed methods above.
