When raising fish in a pond, if the water body becomes oxygen-deficient, it will cause fish and shrimp to gasp at the surface, and in severe cases may lead to suffocation and death. Below, the editor will share an introduction to fish pond aeration methods.

1. Fish pond aeration methods

There are four commonly used methods for aerating a fish pond: the first is to equip an aerator, commonly a paddlewheel aerator or a turbine aerator; the second is to equip bottom-pipe aeration, using microporous aeration and nano-microporous aeration; the third is chemical aeration, adding sodium carbonate, calcium peroxide, etc.; the fourth is biological aeration, culturing algae, diatoms and chlorella.

2. Precautions for using aerators for fish pond aeration

1. Turn on the aerator at noon on sunny days

At this time, the temperature difference between the upper and lower water layers in the fish pond is relatively large, and the oxygen in the lower layer of water cannot be replenished in time. Turning on the aerator at the right time can allow the upper and lower water layers to exchange, greatly reducing the temperature difference and oxygen difference, and the oxygen in the lower layer of water can be replenished in time.

2. Turn on the aerator in the early morning on cloudy days

At this time, the intensity of sunlight is weak, the photosynthesis of phytoplankton in the fish pond produces less oxygen, and the dissolved oxygen condition of the entire water body is poor. Therefore, turning on the aerator in the early morning when the dissolved oxygen point is relatively low can solve the “fish gasping at the surface” crisis caused by water body oxygen deficiency around dawn.

3. Turn on the aerator in the middle of the night during continuous rainy days

Under continuous rainy conditions, due to the long-term lack of sunlight, the photosynthesis of phytoplankton in the fish pond produces very little oxygen, so the aerator must be turned on in the middle of the night to prevent fish from dying from pond turnover.

4. Do not turn on the aerator in the evening

When the sun sets, the photosynthesis of phytoplankton in the fish pond is about to stop and can no longer supply oxygen to the water. Then, if the aerator is turned on at this time, the dissolved oxygen in the upper layer of water will be reduced and cannot be replenished, and the dissolved oxygen in the lower layer of water will soon be consumed, accelerating the rate of oxygen consumption, making “fish gasping at the surface” more likely to occur the next morning.

5. Length of operating time

In sweltering weather, the aerator should be turned on for a long time, and in cool weather for a short time; when turned on in the middle of the night, the time should be long, and at noon it should be short; after fertilizing, the aerator should be turned on for a long time, and when not fertilizing it should be short; when the wind is light, the aerator should be turned on for a long time, and when the wind is strong it should be short.

In addition, aerating the fish pond at intervals during normal times can improve water quality, so do not wait until oxygen deficiency occurs each time before doing it.
