Why Your Cat Won't Eat and Seems Listless, and How to Fix It
Modern people all like to keep pets to keep them company, and cats are one of the most popular domestic pets. But when a cat shows something abnormal, such as not eating and being listless, its owner is sure to worry. So what should you do when this happens?
What should you do when your cat won't eat and seems listless?
When this happens to a cat, the owner must first figure out what is causing it; responding with the right approach for each different cause is the correct way to handle it.
1. Unsuitable food
People can be picky eaters, and cats can be “picky” too. If the cat food is something it does not like or is not suitable for it, it will not eat, and without enough nutrition it will become listless. In addition, if a cat eats too much or is too full, its appetite will also drop and it will become listless.
Solution: Feed according to the cat's situation. For example, for cats under three months old, dry cat food is not recommended; give easily digestible liquid foods instead (milk powder, millet porridge, rice broth, etc.). For cats over three months old, feeding cat food should follow a regular routine: two or three meals a day, and when the cat is about 80 percent full at each meal, take the food away.
2. Digestive discomfort
If a cat suddenly loses interest in the cat food or treats it used to love, it is very likely that there is some problem with digestion; but if it also vomits, has diarrhea, and its stool has a fishy, foul smell, it may have enteritis or feline panleukopenia.
Solution: If it is poor digestion, you can feed a gastrointestinal motility aid, and it is recommended to give it together with yogurt or honey water. If it is accompanied by adverse reactions such as vomiting, take it to the pet hospital right away so a veterinarian can make a professional diagnosis and provide treatment.
3. No appetite in hot weather
Cats are also fairly sensitive to heat, and when the weather is too hot, they have no appetite either.
Solution: You can prepare more water for the cat, and at the same time let it stay in an air-conditioned room, or use a fan to cool it down.
So when keeping a cat, you must carefully observe its eating and other conditions; if you notice anything wrong, you can take it to the pet hospital for treatment.
